Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Marigold by Periphery

Today's Metal Track of the Day is Marigold by Periphery. This is off of the band's latest album Periphery III: Select Difficulty which was released last month. The album title, like many of their past song titles, is inspired by the numerous video games that have the option to 'select difficulty.

The numbering of their albums is a little confusing. This is their fifth studio album but it is labeled as III. I read in my Guitar Magazine today that they treat their previous release, the double album Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega, as separate since it was a concept album.

Today's Metal Track is Make Total Destroy by Periphery. This is off of their 2012 album Periphery II: This Time It's Personal. Spencer shows off his vocal range in this song while the band goes full on djent mode.

'Djent'le Wednesdays: Benea Reach - Awakening

Benea Reach is from Oslo, Norway.  They have released three albums thus far.  This track is the opening track from the album "Alleviat" called Awakening.  Definitely a band worth checking out further if you're into the Djent genre or are fans of Periphery, Monuments, Tesseract etc.

'Djent'le Wednesdays: Sybreed - Emma-O

Sybreed doesn't meet the typical requirements of what one might call a Djent band, however if you go back to my first post on djent, you'll see that the term is rather controversial and somewhat ambiguous as to what bands fall into that category.

I'm including Sybreed because they state Meshuggah as a primary influence in their music, and being that Meshuggah coined the term, I'd say guilty by association.

Sybreed is from Switzerland and have released four albums to date.  This track is the opening track from their album Antares called Emma-O.

Instrumental Mondays: Bulb - Not Enough Mana

This track comes from an artist called Bulb.  He's better known as Misha Mansoor, the guitarist from the increasingly popular band Periphery.

This track is very cool and one of the first tracks I heard from this guy.  He recorded all the intstruments himself.  He is actually a great drummer in addition to being an excellent guitar player as well.  He played a couple of the first shows Periphery had behind the kit.

'Djent'le Wednesdays: Meshuggah - Rational Gaze

Music is great in that there are so many different genres.  You have Rock, Pop, Techno, Soft Rock, Metal, Classical etc.  But beyond that, each of those genres can be broken into different sub-genres.  Metal is one such genre that has splintered in many different directions.  See the Map of Metal for further research or watch Metal: A Headbanger's Journey by Sam Dunn.

Currently the sub-genre of metal I'm listening to the most these days is a rather controversial one called Djent (pronounced Gent like Gentlemen or Gentle).  The term "djent" is sort of an onomatopoeia for the sound that the guitars make when playing this style of music.  The reason for the controversy is that there are some people that don't believe that Djent is an actual genre of music, or just think of it as a passing fad.  This may very well be true, however there are plenty of bands out there playing this style of music and finding a great deal of success with it. 

Regardless of the thought's on the genre's validity, before I knew about Djent, I knew about Meshuggah.  This band is probably the single biggest influence on the genre as a whole.  There are other bands who are certainly pushing this genre further, but when they point to their biggest influences, it always points back to Meshuggah.

This track is the first track I ever heard from this band and it had me hooked.  The rhythms are infectious and just stick with you.
