Weekend Wildcard - Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant

This Weekend's Wildcard is Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant. This is off of his 1982 album Killer on the Rampage. The single was later released in the US the following year and became a big hit.

Electric Avenue is a reference to the first section to get lights in the market area of Brixton, South of London. It poor area populated mainly by Caribbean immigrants. Tension in the area led to violence in the streets known as the 1981 Brixton Riot.

"Down in the street there is violence
And a lots of work to be done
No place to hang out our washing
And I can't blame all on the sun, oh no
We gonna rock down to Electric Avenue"
