So the song of the day is none other than a classic from the late,
great Phife Dawg aka the Five Foot Assassin, who passed away this week
at the age of 45, of the legendary group A Tribe Called Quest. His witty
intellectual wordplay combined with Q-Tip's abstract lyricism and Ali
Shaeed Muhammad's masterful production blending jazz & soul samples
with hip hop, allowed this group to carve their own lane in the early
90's that were dominated by gangsta rap. This unique and posi
tive
vibe allowed ATCQ to appeal to fans of all races and creeds and they
pioneered the sound for many of today's hip hop greats.
"Check the Rhyme" was one of the early hits by the group, where you can
tell the duo of Phife and Tip are genuinely having fun spitting great
verses, dropping knowledge, and calling out any MC in the industry that
thinks they can compete. That was always Phife's M.O. and he
consistently delivered. Oh and if you've ever heard the line "I like
them brown, yellow, Puerto Rican or Haitian", just know who it
originated from 😉 (see "Electric Relaxation"). Enjoy and R.I.P. Malik Isaac Taylor.
