Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Falling Away From Me by Korn

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Korn off of their 1999 album Issues. I don't listen to these guys much anymore but when I was 15 they were like the greatest thing in the world. This song is about domestic abuse and encouraging victims to try and find ways to get out of it such as telling someone or reaching out for help.

I chose this song because it brings back a fun memory of mine. This was the first single released off of the album and its world premier video was played on MTV in November of 1999 which happens to be the month I starting officially "Going Out" with Jessica. I was actually on the phone with her when the video came on and went nuts with excitement; screaming and jumping around. I'm sure it freaked her out a little bit but that was an early sign that she was a keeper. She put up with my craziness then and she still puts up with it today.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Albatross by Corrosion of Conformity

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Corrosion of Conformity. This is a pretty awesome laid back jam off of their 1994 album Deliverance which was the first by the band to feature Pepper as the vocalist for the entire album. This was the first single released from that album. This song is also a playable track on the Guitar Hero: Metallica game.

This is the closing track off of their 1995 debut album NOLA which of course is the abbreviation of New Orleans, LA.  Their style of music is often referred to as sludge metal. It's no Pantera but it's good.

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is brought to you by Warrant. This one comes off of their 1990 album Cherry Pie. This song is based on a true story involving the lead singer, Jani Lane. RIP Jani Lane

Weekend Wildcard - The Day I Tried to Live by Soundgarden

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by Soundgarden. This one comes off of their 1994 album Superunknown. Chris Cornell has always been one of my favorite vocalist is any genre of music. I've always like this song for its unique style and sound. It has a very odd tuning of EEBBB. Between the Buried and Me covered this on their cover album The Anatomy Of.

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by the Canadian progress metal band Protest the Hero. If you like heavy metal but dislike harsh vocals, check these guys out. This one comes off of their 2011 album Scurrilous.

The album cover is a 60 year old painting by the bassist's grandfather titled "Scurrilous" which means vulgar, verbal abuse. As you can see these guys like to have fun when doing music videos and don't take it too seriously.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Ænema by Tool

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Tool. This is the "title track" off of the band's 1996 album Ænima. It's not technically the title track since the spelling differs by one letter but it's close enough.

This song is basically an attack on celebrity culture in L.A. This includes the Church of Scientology, rappers, Hollywood executives and actresses. The song suggests that the state of California should break off from the U.S. and be flushed down the toilet. This idea is based on the comedian Bill Hick's sketch "Arizona  Bay."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Be Still and Know by Machine Head

Today's Metal Track comes from Machine Head. This one is off of their latest effort, Into the Locust, which was released in 2011. The title comes from Psalm 46 of the Bible: "Be still, and know that I am God."

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Down in a Hole by Alice in Chains

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is brought to you by Alice in Chains. This one comes off of their 1992 album Dirt. It was their best album and one of the best rock albums of all time. Jerry said that he almost didn't share it with the band because he feared it was too soft but it was received well and has become one of their bigger hits.

Jerry Cantrell, who wrote the song, said the the song is "in my top three, personally. It's to my long-time love. It's the reality of my life, the path I've chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It's hard for us to both understand...that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships"

Weekend Wildcard - Estranged by Guns N' Roses

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by Guns N' Roses. This comes off of their 1993 Use Your Illusions II album and clocks in at almost 10 minutes. This song features some great work by Slash who has stated that recording guitar for this track was very intensive. The liner notes in the album thanked Slash for "the killer guitar melodies", which captured Axl Rose's vision.

This video was the third installment of a series of videos inspired by Del James from the two Use Your Illusion albums. Del James is a close friend of Axl's and is the road manager for the band. The previous two were Don't Cry and November Rain. Any video that contains Slash rising from the ocean to break into an awesome guitar solo is okay in my book.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - 7 Words by Deftones

Today's Metal track is an old Deftones track. This is off of their major label debut album Adrenaline which was released in 1995. 7 words = "You have the right to remain silent"

The lead singer Chino stated, "I wrote it back when I was 16 years old. It's probably one of the angriest songs I've ever written. It was about being oppressed by people around me, the authorities, I felt like the whole world was against me. It was like I was lashing out at those people."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Trapped Under Ice by Metallica

Today's Metal Track is Trapped Under Ice by Metallica off of their 1984 album Ride the Lightning. Hopefully you all made it home by now and are not "trapped under ice". However, if you are, I've heard that if you play this song loud enough James Hetfield will come rescue you on a dog sled pulled by Siberian Huskies. Kind of like the metal version of the State Farm jingle.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Blitzkrieg by Blitzkrieg

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by the English band Blitzkrieg. This self-titled song is the bands most famous song. It was a B-side of the 1981 single Buried Alive which was released 4 years before the bands first studio album.

Metallica covered this in 1984 on the B-side of their Creeping Death EP. It was also included on the 1988 re-release of Kill Em' All along with their cover of Am I Evil. That is the version of Kill Em' All that I grew up on and my brother and I still have that cassette today. It can also be found on their Garage Inc. album that was released in  1998.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Roots Bloody Roots by Sepultura

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Sepultura. This is off of the Brazilian band's 6th album Roots which was released in 1996. It is the best known song by the band and remains a concert staple. I got to see them perform in Atlantic City in 2012 at Metallica's Orion Festival.

The video was filmed in the catacombs underneath the city of Sao Paulo, where the Brazilian slaves were sold and tortured. It shows Brazilians practicing Capoeira (martial art/dance) and native tribes playing the drums in their tribe uniforms.

Weekend Wildcard - East 1999 by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. This is off of their second album E. 1999 Eternal which was released in 1995. The album title was a combination of the street E. 99 in Cleveland where the band members are from and Easy E's album Eternal E. Easy E, Bone's executive producer that was instrumental in the band's success, died just 4 months before this album was released.

The band includes 5 members; Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone, and Flesh-n-Bone. They have always been one of my favorite rap groups due to their flow and melodic rapping style.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Suicide Messiah by Black Label Society

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Black Label Society. This is another one of the 2005 album Mafia. Zakk said that this song is about STP font man Scott Weiland's heroin addiction.

From an interview with Zakk: "I love Scott, he is amazing. He is like Dude, I got a problem, and I gotta stop. So that inspired me to write 'Bow Down, You Chose Your Maker, He Never Gives, He is always a taker, he is the Suicide Messiah.' Everyone I have ever known, I have never done that stuff in my life, always winds up dead or broke from doing that crap."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Revolution Calling by Queensrÿche

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Queensrÿche. This one comes off of their 1988 concept album Operation Mindcrime. It is a story of a recovering drug addict who becomes disillusioned with the society of his time and reluctantly becomes involved with a revolutionary group as an assassin of political leaders.

Geoff Tate is an awesome singer and I always loved is vocals. Unfortunately it appears that he is a real douchebag to his band mates including spitting on the drummer during live shows. It ultimately led to the band parting ways and forming two Queensrÿches which are both active today, weird.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - March of the Pigs by Nine Inch Nails

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Nine Inch Nails. This one comes off of their sophomore album The Downward Spiral which was released in 1994. It is the album that really broke NIN on to the scene and is still considered by many as the band's best work. This song has been a staple at NIN shows due to its high energy mixed with two piano breakdowns.

Trent Reznor, along with Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and Lindsey Buckingham were disrespectfully cut off TV during their performance at the Grammy's this year.

Today's Instrumental Track is brought to you by Scale the Summit. This is one comes off of their 4th and most recent album The Migration which came out last year. This is an excellent play through video with great scenery.

Headless guitars still freak me out a little but these guys are so good that I can put up with it. The awesome thing is these guys are young and should be making great music for a long time.

Scott's Weekend Wildcard - Zed and Two Naughts by The Mars Volta

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by The Mars Volta. This comes off of their most recent album Noctourniquet which was released in 2012. Unfortunately it looks like this was their final album as the band has called it quits. This song was also featured on the soundtrack for MLB 12: The Show.

"Zed and Two Naughts" refers to A Zed & Two Noughts, a 1985 film written and directed by Peter Greenaway; additionally, Zed being the letter Z, and the two naughts being O's, the word that can be pulled from the title is zoo, which relates to "The Boy With the Voice in his Knives", the story written by Bixler-Zavala. In the track-by-track analysis of the album, Bixler-Zavala likens the protagonist's home life as being "a zoo".
