Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Love by Gojira

So this video is an accurate portrayal of how I start my mornings. I wake up with a head full of hair, dip my head in the water making it all fall out, and then frantically run to work (a power company) with one of the most epic riffs ever as background music. True story!

Today's Metal Track is Love by Gojira off of their 2003 debut album Terra Incognita. Seriously though, isn't that main riff ridiculous? The band posted a teaser for their new album set to come out this year. We So Excite!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Holomovement by The Contortionist

Today's Metal Track is Holomovement by progressive heavy metal band The Contortionist. This is the opening track off of their 2012 album Intrinsic.

The band features brothers Robby Baca on guitar and Joey Baca on drums. I guess Chew Baca was too busy gallivanting around with Han in a galaxy far far away. I'm sorry, we watched Empire Strikes Back tonight and I couldn't help myself.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Dethroned by Death Angel

Today's Metal Track is Dethroned by Death Angel. This is off their 2008 album Killing Season. I like the top comment on the YouTube video: "0:55 it becomes an official metal video as the chainsaw is fired up."

I just saw where they will be releasing a new album on May 27th. I couldn't find any singles released for it yet though. Looking forward to it.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Stolas by Scale the Summit

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Stolas by Scale the Summit off of their latest album V which according to the video is pronounced Roman Numeral Five. We the video first started I thought it was going to be seriously lame and cheesy. But then it totally redeemed itself with the VH1 Pop Up Video style comments.

Some of the best pop ups:
"Chris started on bass and then moved to a real instrument"
"Travis actually owns this outfit"
"No headstocks were harmed during the filming of this solo"

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Killer is Me by Alice In Chains

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Killer is Me by Alice in Chains. This is the encore song from their 1996 MTV: Unplugged performance. It was cut from the live broadcast but later included on the the CD/DVD release.

This is one of the handful of songs where Cantrell has lead vocals. I believe the band finalized this song during the rehearsals for this show. They apparently had been working on it for a few years. This was the first time is was released.

I wish we could all hug you too Layne. RIP :(

Weekend Wildcard (Hosted by Andre) - Check The Rhyme by A Tribe Called Quest

So the song of the day is none other than a classic from the late, great Phife Dawg aka the Five Foot Assassin, who passed away this week at the age of 45, of the legendary group A Tribe Called Quest. His witty intellectual wordplay combined with Q-Tip's abstract lyricism and Ali Shaeed Muhammad's masterful production blending jazz & soul samples with hip hop, allowed this group to carve their own lane in the early 90's that were dominated by gangsta rap. This unique and positive vibe allowed ATCQ to appeal to fans of all races and creeds and they pioneered the sound for many of today's hip hop greats.

"Check the Rhyme" was one of the early hits by the group, where you can tell the duo of Phife and Tip are genuinely having fun spitting great verses, dropping knowledge, and calling out any MC in the industry that thinks they can compete. That was always Phife's M.O. and he consistently delivered. Oh and if you've ever heard the line "I like them brown, yellow, Puerto Rican or Haitian", just know who it originated from 😉 (see "Electric Relaxation"). Enjoy and R.I.P. Malik Isaac Taylor.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Deep Six by Marilyn Manson

As a follow to yesterday's NIN post, today we have Marilyn Manson who was extremely influenced by Trent Reznor. Today's Metal Track is Deep Six, the lead single off of his 2015 album The Pale Emperor. I'm a big fan of this album and think it is my favorite since Mechanical Animals.

You want to know what Zeus said to Narcissus?
"You better watch yourself"
"You better watch yourself"

It's like a stranger had a key, came inside my mind
And moved all my things around
But he didn't know snakes can't kneel or prey
Try to break my psyche down

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Closer by Nine Inch Nails

Okay so this may not be metal but I think it fits. I've always been amazed at how dark/heavy this song seems with very little use of guitars.

Today's Metal Track is Closer by Nine Inch Nails. This iconic track is off of his 1994 album The Downward Spiral. This song and especially this video bolstered NIN into success. The video that aired on MTV in heavy rotation displayed title cards with "Scene Missing" written on them during the deleted scenes. This is obviously the unedited version.

In 2006, "Closer" was voted number one in a VH1 Classic poll titled "20 Greatest Music Videos of All Time.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Chasing the Edge by Havok

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne

Today's Metal Track is No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne. This is the title track off of his 1991 album by the same name. I pick this song not because it is one of my favorites but because it was one of my favorite songs to parody. My brother and I use to parody this song, Yankovic style, in the form of No More Beers. I can't remember every line but we had almost the entire song parodied.

I looked in the cooler and what did I see
No more Beers
No more Beers

(It's just a hand in the cooler
in the cooler,
in the cooler,
in the cooler)

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - The Warmth of the Daytime Seemed Like a Dream Now by Cloudkicker

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is The Warmth of the Daytime Seemed Like a Dream Now by Cloudkicker. This is the opening track off of his 2013 album Subsume. The first 3 minutes are mostly silent so you can skip forward if you want. It's only about two minutes of music but what a great two minutes it is.

I think he just arbitrarily picked points in the recordings to break up the tracks because it seems like this song takes up the last part of track one and the first part of track two which is even better.

Here is the entire album if you to hear the transition from track one to two.

Weekend Wildcard - Rocket Queen by Guns N' Roses

This Weekend's Wildcard is my favorite Guns N' Roses song of all time. This is Rocket Queen off of their 1987 debut album Appetite for Destruction. Axl's vocal performance in the second of the song is the highlight of the song. This is a fan made video; they never released an official video.

Axl Rose wrote the lyrics for "Barbi (Rocket Queen) Von Greif" as she is credited on the album. She was gonna have a band called Rocket Queen and Axl was infatuated with her. He said that she kept him alive for awhile. The message at the end of the song is directed towards her.

The remaining backstory on this track is pretty crazy and epitomizes the life style of 80s bands on the Sunset Strip. Let's just say Adrianna Smith, Steven Adler's former girlfriend, provided some guest background vocals starting around the 2:20 mark in the song with a little help from Axl.

Backstory on the 'background vocals' at the 5:25 mark:

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Not Unlike the Waves by Agalloch

Today's Metal Track is a beauty by Agalloch. This is Not Unlike the Waves off of their 2006 album Ashes Against the Grain. I really don't know how you couldn't like this song. Such a great atmospheric feel to it. Gives me chill bumps.

Scott Metal Track of the Day - Brainwashed by Nuclear Assault

Today's Metal Track is an old school thrash song by Nuclear Assault. This is Brainwashed off of their 1988 album Survive. I did not know this but their bassist, Dan Linker, was a the original bassist for Anthrax. He was fired by the band following the release of their debut album Fistful of Metal.

This song still resonates today. It is an anti-mainstream media rant about how it is used to brainwash the public.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Sequoia Throne by Protest the Hero

Today's Metal Track is Sequoia Throne by Protest the Hero. This is off of their 2009 album Fortress. The music video is out there on YouTube as well but the audio quality is terrible so I didn't post that one. The band had a remix contest for their fans using this song. Three winners were chosen and their mixes were release on iTunes and one was released on a Metal Hammer compilation album.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Mordecai by Between the Buried and Me

Thanks to Adam for filling in for me after my modem got fried. Got a new one today so we are back in business.

Today's Metal Track is Mordecai by Between the Buried And Me. This is off of their 2003 album The Silent Circus. The first 2 1/2 minutes of this track are absolutely brutal and will probably not appeal to most people. If it doesn't, I urge you to skip to the 2:30. From that point on is just beautiful.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day (Hosted by Adam) - We Are The Sleep by Mors Principium Est

I'm filling in for Scott for the metal track of the day. This band should be a new one for everyone who follows the tracks and listens. This band is called Mors Principium Est and they are from Finland. The band name means "death is the beginning" and this track is called "We Are The Sleep". Enjoy!!!

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Luck Man by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Ooooh, what a lucky man... He was

In honor of the passing of Keith Emerson, today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Lucky Man by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. This is off of their 1970 self-titled debut album. This song contains one of the first ever Moog synthesizer solos (At the end of the song) which was recorded by the legendary Keith Emerson in just one take.

RIP Keith!

Welp, I'm getting drug to another country concert tonight. Just kidding, they are fun and Garth is one I like. I will be rocking a metal shirt again though :)

This Weekend's Wildcard is Friends In Low Places by Chris Gaines, I mean, Garth Brooks. It's one of the most popular sing-a-long songs in country history. This is of his 1990 album No Fences. It was written by Dewayne Blackwell and Earl Bud Lee. The two gave it to Garth to record as a demo just before he released is debut self titled in 1989.

One funny thing I found while looking up this video on YouTube is the amount of videos posted that are covers but are not listed as covers. Somehow they have more views than the real Garth and it ticks everyone off, lol.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Walk by Pantera

Walk on home boy!

Today's Metal Track is Walk by Pantera. This is off of their 1992 album Vulgar Display of Power. This is one of the most popular songs in their discography. This song is about telling someone who comes at you with an attitude to take that attitude and take a walk.
My favorite part of the song is the riff for the outro.

RIP Dime!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Arise by Sepultura

Today's Metal Track is Arise by Sepultura. This is the opening track and title track off of their 1991 album by the same name. This was the band's first ever single. This music video was banned by MTV when it came out due to its controversial imagery.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - To the End by Lamb of God

Today's Metal Track is To the End by Lamb of God. This is off of their 2012 album Resolution. This is one of my favorites from that album. It's got a major Pantera groove metal style to it.

I've held the hand of God and I've sang the Devil's song
And when it comes my time no tears are gonna fall
But some will light the fire
And some will mourn the one
Left longing for the ire of their departed son.

Today's Metal Track is Unfit for Human Consumption by Carcass. These guys are from Liverpool and formed back in the 80s. This is off of their 2013 album Surgical Steel which is their most recent album. I saw these guys the other week when they opened for Slayer and they put on a good show.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Devil Take Tomorrow by Marty Friedman

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Devil Take Tomorrow by Marty Friedman. This is a live performance he did for EMGTV supporting the EMG pickups he uses on his guitar. This song is from his 2006 album Loudspeaker.

If you are wondering what language he is speaking at the beginning, it's Japanese. He has lived their since 2003.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - House of Pain by Faster Pussycat

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is House of Pain by Faster Pussycat. This is off of their 1989 album Wake Me When It's Over. Michael Bay direct the music video for this song. He was about 24 at the time and had not yet began his film career. While on tour for this album in 1990 drummer Mark Michals was arrested for FedExing heroin to himself. He was then fired from the band.

Weekend Wildcard - Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon

This Weekend's Wildcard is Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon. This is off of his 1978 album Excitable Boy. It's still funny and sad that some people think that the Kid Rock song (All Summer Long?) is using the music from Sweet Home Alabama vs this song.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Obey the Cowgod by Green Jello

Are You Ready

To Obey

The Cowgod!

Today's Metal Track is Obey the Cowgod by the comedic metal/punk band Green Jello (Later forced to changed their name to Green Jelly). This is the opening song off of their 1992 video album Cereal Killer. Initially the album was only available on video until the soundtrack was released the following year. I got the inspiration to post this song from an old thread on TWW that was bumped today.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Needle Lies by Queensryche

Today's Metal Track is The Needle Lies by Queensryche. This is another one off of their fantastic 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime. Remember that Dr. X has manipulated Nikki through drug addiction and brainwashing to carry out assassinations at his command.

In this song, Nikki is telling Dr. X he wants out while Dr. X temps him with heroin, telling him he will never be able to escape. Nikki narrates his internal struggles with resisting the temptation. He even takes a blade and carves the phrase "Don't ever trust the needle, it lies" into his arm as a reminder of how harmful it is.

Wet and raving
The needle keeps calling me back
To bloody my hands forever
Carved my cure with the blade
That left me in scars
Now every time I'm weak
Words scream from my arm

Don't ever trust
Don't ever trust the needle, it lies

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Davidian by Machine Head

Today's Metal Track is Davidian by Machine Head. This is the opening track off of their 1994 album Burn My Eyes. The title is a reference to the Branch Davidians and the famous Waco Siege of 1993.

The Branch Davidians were a religious sect led by David Koresh. Federal and State law enforcement agencies conducted a siege of their compound beginning February 28, 1993 which resulted in a 51 day standoff. In the end, the compound caught fire and around 80 people were killed. The final raid and fire was shown on live TV.

Here is some background on the siege

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Pot by Tool

Today's Metal Track is The Pot by Tool. This is off of their 2006 album 10,000 Days. Unfortunately, it is their most recent album. Hopefully we will get a new one this year.

The title "The Pot" is a double entendre referencing marijuana as well as the phrase "The pot calling the kettle black." The song calls out hypocrites who judge stoners but have their own faults. It also speaks of the injustice of these minor offenders being sent to prison. Maynard uses numerous references to a kangaroo court which is defined as a "mock court in which the principles of law and justice are disregarded or perverted".

"Soapbox, house of cards, and glass
So don't go tossin' your stones around"
...
"Who are you to wave your finger?
So full of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
F'ing hypocrite
Liar, lawyer, mirror show me
What's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent"
