Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Jack and the Ripper by Buckethead with Michael Kamen

Today's Instrumental Metal Track comes from one of my favorite soundtracks, Last action Hero, which came out back in 1993. I have it on cassette around here somewhere. Even though I listened to this for years as a kid, I didn't know who Buckethead was until years later. This was pretty early on in his career.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Beyond This Life by Dream Theater

Today's Metal Track comes from Dream Theater's 1999 masterpiece Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory. It's considered to be one of the greatest progressive metal albums of all time and I completely agree. This concept album tells the story of Nicholas who discovers that, in a previous life, he was a woman, Victoria Page, who had been murdered in 1928. Through past life regression therapy and hypnosis, he spends the entire album trying to solve the murder which involved a love triangle between Victoria and two brothers, Julian and Edward.

In Act I: Scene Four: Beyond This Life, we see the events portrayed as a murder/suicide as told through newspaper articles and the eyes of a witness who happens to be Edward. The "witness" says when he came upon the scene he saw Victoria on the ground dead with Julian standing by with gun in hand before taking his own life.

Is this what really happened or did Victoria agree to take Julian back and Edward killed them both in a fit of rage. Did anyone read this far? Does anyone care? If so, be sure to listen and read about Act 2!

Our deeds have travelled far
What we have been is what we are
All that we learn this time
Is carried beyond this life

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Dulcinea by Isis

Today's Metal Track is Dulcinea by Isis. This is off of their 2006 album In the Absence of Truth. I'm okay with the fact that they are doing it but still a pain.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Wake Up Dead by Lamb of God ft. Dave Mustaine

Today's Metal Track is a cover of Megaedth's classic Wake Up Dead by Lamb of God featuring the man himself Dave Mustaine. This was just released last week and Dave and Randy have been doing interviews with Jose Mangin on Liquid Metal to discuss their upcoming tour and Megadeth's new album that's in the works. Dave even talked about the potential for them to perform this song together live on tour. This is one of my favorite Megadeth tracks which was originally released on their 1986 album Peace Sells... but Who's Buying. The final minute and solo are just too good.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track - Objets de Vertu

I've had today's Instrumental Track stuck in my head for the past week. I was led to it by the Spotify algorithm after listening to Animals As Leaders which is another 3 piece instrumental band. What is funny is Animals as Leaders has two guitarists and no bass player while The Omnific have two bass players and no guitarists. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Objets de Vertu is off of their 2017 album Kismet.

Scott Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Micro-Aggressions by Animals As Leaders

Yesterday marked 9 years since I started my daily Metal Tracks. Never thought I'd make it this long. Guess I might as well shoot for 10 at this point. Luckily there is enough metal in the world for me to stick with my "no repeats" rule.

And luckily awesome new metal is still being release every week. Today's Instrumental Track is new music from the 8-string playing monsters in Animals as Leaders. I have a hard enough time with 6. Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes are just insane. This is Micro-Aggressions off of Parrhesia which came out last Friday.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Put Your Back Into the Oar by Amon Amarth

One of these days I'm going to convince Kristen to give me control of the music at Orangetheory so I can blast this while Kevin and I crush the rowers. Today's Metal Track is Put Your Back Into The Oar by Amon Amarth. This is a brand new standalone single but the band has indicated they are working on a new album.

From the band:
"Much has been said about fans coming to our shows to have fun and doing the 'epic Viking row'. Well we thought it was a good idea to write a song about it! This one is for you, the fans, wherever you are - and may Odin guide you as you row to your destiny in uncharted seas!"

ROW!
ROW!
ROW!
The oar is your best friend!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - D. N. R. by Testament

Looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Happy Returns by Steven Wilson

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is another beautiful, touching song by Steven Wilson. Happy Returns is off of his album Hand. Cannot. Erase. which came out 7 years ago today. Wilson states that the album is "about a woman growing up, who goes to live in the city, very isolated, and she disappears one day and no one notices." It's based loosely on Joyce Carol Vincent who died in her apartment in the city but no one notices for two years even thought she had friends and family.

In Happy Returns, the protagonist is writing a letter to her distant brother but before she finishes, she drifts away due to her feeling drowsy.

"Hey brother, I feel I’m living in parentheses
And I've got trouble with the bills
Do the kids remember me?
Well I got gifts for them
And for you more sorrow
But I’m feeling kind of drowsy now
So I’ll finish this tomorrow"

But she doesn't...

Today's Metal Track is Feel What I Believe by the new project, The Halo Effect, which features 5 former members from the Swedish metal band In Flames. This is the second single from their debut album which is set to be released later this year.

Vocalist Mikael Stanne is also the vocalist for Dark Tranquility. He provided lead vocals on In Flames debut album as session musician. Current In Flames vocalist, Anders Friden, was originally the lead vocalist of Dark Tranquility while Stanne was the lead guitarist. When  Anders took over vocals for In Flames, Stanne took over vocals for Dark Tranquility so they effectively switched places.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Live Young, Die Free by Overkill

When I looked into your eyes I saw how much you cried
And I had a revelation
The pain wouldn't last, the scars, they would last
Into God's creation
Blessed secrets holding me
Then we all close our eyes, lay down and sighed
Live Young, Die Free!

Today's Metal Track is blistering thrash from one of the best to ever do it. Live Young, Die Free is off of Overkill's 1991 album Horrorscope. It's tough to choose between this album and Years of Decay as my favorite. Both are just loaded with trash metal greatness.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Like a Sword Over Damocles

You keep haaaaaanging this over me
Like a swooooord over Damocles
My life held by a thread and it's starting to sway
Like a sword over Damocles

Today's Metal Track is Sword Over Damocles by Trivium off of their latest album, In Court of the Dragon, which came out last year.

The Sword of Damocles is an ancient anecdote about the ever-present threat of danger faced by those in positions of power. Comparing it to a sword hanging over your head that could fall at anytime.

"According to the story, Damocles was pandering to his king, Dionysius, exclaiming that Dionysius was truly fortunate as a great man of power and authority without peer, surrounded by magnificence. In response, Dionysius offered to switch places with Damocles for one day so that Damocles could taste that very fortune firsthand. Damocles quickly and eagerly accepted the king's proposal. Damocles sat on the king's throne, surrounded by countless luxuries. There were beautifully embroidered rugs, fragrant perfumes and the most select of foods, piles of silver and gold, and the service of attendants unparalleled in their beauty, surrounding Damocles with riches and excess. But Dionysius, who had made many enemies during his reign, arranged that a sword should hang above the throne, held at the pommel only by a single hair of a horse's tail to evoke the sense of what it is like to be king: though having much fortune, always having to watch in fear and anxiety against dangers that might try to overtake him. Damocles finally begged the king that he be allowed to depart because he no longer wanted to be so fortunate, realizing that with great power comes great responsibility."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Not in Rivers, But in Drops by Isis

Been on an Isis kick lately. Panopticon mostly. But I've posted that entire album already so on we go to the follow up album. Not in Rivers, But in Drops is off of their 2006 album In the Absence of Truth. Still bummed these guys called it quits. Hard to believe it's been over 10 years.
