Scott's Christmas Metal Track of the Day - You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch by Small Town Titans

Today's Metal Track is an absolutely fantastic cover of You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch by Small Town Titans. Many of you have probably already heard this as I have seen it floating around and a few of my friends already shared this. Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Hold On To Love by Jason Becker

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Hold On To Love by Jason Becker. Jason has ALS so even though he wrote the music and lyrics, he is unable to physically perform the song himself. Numerous musicians and singers pitched in to record the track. Too many to list but you can read about in in the YouTube description.

"This is my story, and in a way, everyone’s story. Life – we are all just trying to be happy. People are baffled that I can be happy after almost 30 years with ALS. Even I sometimes wonder how it is possible. This song is the simple answer. Most of this video takes place in my mind. I am talking to myself, looking for answers, thinking about the past and some of the people I love, and it all comes out in music." - Jason Becker

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish by A Perfect Circle

Time is money and money's time
We wasted every second dime
On diets, lawyers, shrinks and apps and flags and plastic surgery
Now Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali, and Leia have moved on
Signal the final curtain call in all its atomic pageantry

Of the many, many things I am thankful for is great music that is beautiful, thoughtful, inspiring, and intelligent. Today's Metal Track is from one of the greatest artists of our lifetime in Maynard James Keenan. He's best known as the lead singer of Tool but one of his other band's, A Perfect Circle, stands on its on.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Only Us by Thrice

Today's Metal Track is new music by Thrice. This is Only Us off of their latest album Palms which came out back in September.

This is a great nostalgic summer camp video. Of all the shenanigans in the video, the one that makes me cringe is the destroyed cassettes. Kids today won't ever understand that. I still remember my Pantera cassette getting eaten by the cheap tape player we had when I was working at the Peanut Roaster when I was 15. The agony!!!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Baying of the Hounds by Opeth

And so, cold touch now inhumane
Every waking hour

Louder by the minute
The baying of the hounds
Calling me back to my home

Today's Metal Track is The Baying of the Hounds by Swedish progressive metal legends Opeth. This is off of their 2005 album Ghost Reveries. I believe this is one of Greg Anderson's favorite tracks. Just a monster of song. Too many different good parts to point out.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Departure by Frames

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Departure by Frames. This is off of the German band's 2012 album In Via.

The spoken work in the middle of the song is taken from a German poem title Stufen by Hemann Hesse.

Translated:

"Steps"

As every blossom wilts and every youth
Yields to age, so blooms every step of life,
So too blooms every wisdom and every virtue
In its time and may not last forever.
The heart must at all of life’s calls
Be ready to part and begin anew,
So that it may, with courage and without grief,
Give itself to new engagements.
In every beginning lives a magic,
Protecting us and helping us to live.

Scott Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Bogatyri by We Lost the Sea

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Bogatyri by the Australian band We Lost the Sea. This is off of their 2015 LP Departure Songs. The guys need to release a new album because I only have one song left on the album to post!

I found the story below on their bandcamp page giving backstory on the song. Pretty sad and cool at the same time.

"Amidst the clean up of the infamous Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in April of 1986, the authorities discovered that the nuclear reactor was flooded with highly radioactive water. The steam from this volatile water was threatening to cause a massive explosion that would carry radioactive material and gas across a large portion of Europe, they needed to open the floodgates to release the pressure in the chamber and save a large part of Europe from nuclear fallout.

To drain the reactor someone would have to dive into the water and open the release valve by hand.; for anyone involved it meant a certain and painful death.

Three men volunteered, now unofficially known as the suicide squad, they didn’t ask for glory or riches, simply that once they passed their families would be looked after. And so three ordinary men, Valeri Bezpalov, Alexie Ananenko and Boris Baranov did an extraordinary thing, and dove into the depths of the reactor.

After the only lamp they had with them fell into the darkness, the three men felt their way towards the gate, and completed their grim mission by opening the valve.

Ten days later all three were buried in lead coffins.

Ukrainian Folklore tells the story of the Bogatyri, three valiant knights of old."

Weekend Wildcard - Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance

This Weekend's Wildcard is Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. This song and album revolve around The Patient and his passage out of life in the form of a black parade. In 2017, this video was recognized as MTV's greatest video of the Century. This rock opera was released in 2006 as the lead single and title track of their album The Black Parade.

Do or die
You'll never make me
Because the world
Will never take my heart
You can try
You'll never break me
We wanna all
We want to play this part
Won't explain
Or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed
I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer
For all the broken
Listen here
Because it's who we are
I'm just a man
I'm not a hero
Just a boy who had to sing this song
I'm just a man
I'm not a hero
I don't care
We'll carry on!

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Viking Kong by Paul Gilbert

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Viking Kong by Paul Gilbert. You can hear it from Paul directly in the video but he wrote this track with the hopes of playing it as a duet with Yngwie Malmsteen. When Yngwie declined, he just decided to play both parts himself and recorded it for his 2000 album Superheroes.

The King Welcomes You To Avatar Country

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Disassociative by Marilyn Manson

I can never get out of here
I don't wanna just float in fear
Dead astronaut in space

Today's Metal Track is one of my favorite Marilyn Manson songs that is truly underrated. Disassociative is off of his 1998 album Mechanical Animals which I still consider his best work even though his recent efforts are just as good. That chorus just gets me in the feels every time. Just a beautiful track all the way through.

The nervous system's down,
the nervous system's
and I know

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Of Unworldly Origin by Revocation

Today's Metal Track is Of Unworldly Origin by Revocation. The internet tells me they are from Boston though which is definitely on Earth so I'm not sure who to believe. I discovered this band yesterday when it popped up as a recommendation in Amazon Music. This track starts off fast and tight and doesn't let up. It's the opening track off of their album The Outer Ones which came out last Friday.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - 10s by Pantera

My foes, they can't destroy my body
Colliding slow, like life itself

Today's Metal Track is 10s by Pantera off of their 1996 album The Great Southern Trendkill. I saw a bunch of mentions of Broly in the comments and had no idea what they were referring to. Evidently this track was used as the theme song for a Dragonball Z character named Broly. I never followed DBZ so I had no idea. That's pretty cool.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Guns Are Loaded by Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway

Today's Metal Track is Guns Are Loaded by Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway. This is off of their album Dictator which was just released in July. What is crazy is the album was actually recorded in 2012 but Daron was unsure what was going to happened with System of a Down. He said that this could have been a SOAD album but the band could agree on a musical direction so he finally released it with Scars on Broadway.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Looks That Kill by Motely Crue

Watching 80s videos with the boys is funny. They ask a lot of questions like "what are they doing" and "is that a girl". Haha. I don't remember asking questions in the 80s when these came out. This video was my introduction to the band when I was a wee lad. In case you have the same questions as the boys, the boys have armpit hair and the girls do not! Otherwise, about the same lol.

Today's Metal Track is Looks That Kill by Motley Crue. This is off of their 1983 album Shout at the Devil. Although he is lesser known member of the band, Mick Mars shines on this track with one of the iconic riffs of of the 80s metal. The other Crue members are the face of the band but I don't think they ever make it without Mick's great guitar work.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - No Shelter by Rage Against The Machine

There be no shelter here
The frontline is everywhere

Today's Metal Track is No Shelter by Rage Against The Machine. This was recorded for the 1998 film Godzilla. The overlying theme of the song is about how the mass media manipulates people and distracts them from the real important issues that are going on. It's funny that Nike is called out in the lyrics and here we are 20 years later with Nike at the forefront of social commentary.

Tuesday, September 11, 2018

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Wolves ov Siberia by Behemoth

Today's Metal Track is brand new Behemoth. Wovles ov Siberia was released last week and will be on the Polish band's upcoming album I Loved You At Your Darkest. Even though the video is fairly graphic, it is tame by Behemoth standards lol.

"It refers to allegiance, it refers to all the free thinkers and rebels that are gathered, and we are part of this rebellion,"
- Nergal Darski

Today's Metal Track is Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold. This is the opening and title travmck off of their 2010 album by the same name. There are many homages paid to The Rev in the video. He was their drummer who wrote most of the drums for the album but died before recording. His drum kit is seen in the video and the video itself is based off of Jacob's Ladder, his favorite movie.

RIP Rev.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Don't Stay Here by Frames

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Don't Stay Here by the German band Frames. I was very confused when I was researching this track because there are lyrics in the YouTube comments and even lyrics posted on lyrics websites. Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Deadhead by Devin Townsend Project

I still can't believe it took me until 2012 to really discover Devin Townsend. I laughed at his skullet during his Strapping Young Lad hears. Heck, I even dressed up for Halloween as the cartoon character based off of his image, Pickles from Dethklok, before I really knew who he was. I think he is one of the most talented individual artist in the business. He's funny and creative, writes beautiful music, and can belt some of the great vocals you'll ever hear. Today's Metal Track is just a small sample of his greatness.

This is Deadhead off his 2003 album Accelerated Evolution performed live in 2015 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Enjoy!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Cowboys From Hell by Pantera

You see us comin'
And you all together run for cover
We're takin' over this town

28 years ago today Pantera released their monumental major label debut album Cowboys From Hell. It's the album that launched them into success and defined what would later be labeled Groove Metal. Prior to this album, the band was more of a power/glam metal band. It was this album that the band really found their identity. Most people I know ignore the first four albums and consider this their real debut.

Today's Metal Track opening and title track from that album. RIP brothers Dime and Vinnie!

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - G.O.A.T. by Polyphia

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is a very unique, funky, smooth track by the guys in Polyphia. I really don't know how to classify this other than awesome. It has a little darker sound than you are used to hearing from them. The first time I listened to it I was thinking it was just a long intro and then it ended and I wanted more!

As far as I know, this is just a single that was released back in May. Not sure if a new album is coming out or not.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Grid by Between the Buried and Me

Mental transformation
We have become their memory

Step back and feel the sun
Step back and touch the end
We are in this together

Today's Metal Track is brand new music by Between the Buried and Me. This is the closing track off of the second part of their two part album Automata. Autmata II, which came out last Friday, only has 4 tracks but it is still over 30 minutes long. As with Automata I, the closing track is once again my favorite. Now the question is, which is better, Blot or The Grid? I'm not going to answer that yet. I need a few more listens. But this is fantastic and beautiful without question!

Weekend Wildcard - Life on Mars? by David Bowie

At the beach this past week we were able to see Mars at night out over the ocean. I think it is supposed to be the biggest around July 27th.

This Weekend's Wildcard is Life on Mars by David Bowie. This is off of his 1971 album Hunky Dory. Bowie has stated the song is about "A sensitive young girl's reaction to the media." and that "I think she finds herself disappointed with reality... that although she's living in the doldrums of reality, she's being told that there's a far greater life somewhere, and she's bitterly disappointed that she doesn't have access to it."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth

Please smile when you think of me
My body's gone that's all

Today's Metal Track is A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth. This is off of their 1994 album Youthanasia. For some reason I always remember listening to this album on my handheld CD player in the library in elementary school.

This was later remade with backing vocals from Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil but I have always been partial to the original.

The main chorus, which is in French, translates to:
"To everyone,
to all my friends,
I love you,
I have to leave"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Domination (Live) by Pantera (RIP Vinnie Paul)

In honor of the sudden passing of the great Vinnie Paul last Friday, today's Metal Track is a live performance of Domination by Pantera. Vinnie was the drummer for Pantera, Damageplan, and HellYeah. He was also the brother of the legendary Dimebag Darrell. Everything you'll ever read or hear about these two brothers will paint a picture of two down to earth, fun loving guys. Both were taken way too soon.

Hopefully these two are jamming out in heaven right now just like they are in this video.

RIP Vinnie!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Blot by Between the Buried and Me

Exploring the escape
Endless lives whispering by… so fast
Circulate

Today's Metal Track is my favorite track off of Between the Buried an Me's latest album Automata I. The other songs are great but this one immediately stood out to me. It has pieces of everything I love about BTBAM.

I was holding off posting this one with the hopes they'd release an official video for it but with Automata II scheduled to come out next month, I don't think that will be happening.

This is Blot

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Hatfield by Byzantine

Was pleasantly surprised last night when I got to the show last night and found out that Byzantine was the opening band. When I bought tickets I saw no mention of them. They said they have been around 18 years and last night was their first show in Raleigh.

They opened up their set last night with today's Metal Track. Hatfield is also the opening track off of their 2004 debut album The Fundamental Component.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Ov Fire and The Void by Behemoth

Kyle Lott and I are going to the Lamb of God and Behemoth show tonight at the Ritz. We've seen Lamb of God but it will be our first time seeing Behemoth. Today's Metal Track is Ov Fire and the Void off of the Polish band's 2009 album Evangelion. It's pretty brutal but the music is tight and well produced.

There is an official video for this but it is very NSFW so I'll let you go check that out at your own risk here.

Scott's Kinda Metal Track of the Day - Monkey Wrench by Foo Fighters

Today's Kinda Metal Track is Monkey Wrench by Foo Fighters. They're definitely more of a rock band than metal but they've got a few songs that flirt with the metal label and this is one of those songs. Especially that bridge at the 3:10 mark. If that doesn't get your juices flowing, I don't know what will.

This is the lead single off of their breakout 1997 album The Colour and the Shape. The song is about Grohl's 4 year marriage to Jennifer Youngblood.

Weekend Wildcard - California Love by Tupac featuring Dr. Dre

California...
Knows how to party

This Weekend's Wildcard is California Love by Tupac featuring Dr. Dre . This was a comeback song for Tupac following his release from prison in 1995. It was released on his 1996 album All Eyes on Me. The video was inspired by Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and was actually shot on the site from the movie. You may also notice Chris Tucker in the video as the evil tribal chief.

When I hear this now I always think of the South Park episode where the boys sing a version of this song to entice the homeless people to move out to California. CALIFOR-NYAW-NYAW
