Weekend Wildcard - Slam by Onyx

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by Onyx. This is a hip-hop classic from back in 1993. Beavis was a big fan of this song too. I tried to find a video where they watched it on the show but couldn't. While this is hip-hop, it is a pretty rocking track. I wish there were more stuff like this getting airplay these days.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Iron Maiden and is in honor of next Tuesday's concert with Megadeth which I will be attending with several friends. This will be my first Maiden concert so I finally get to mark that one off the list.

This song comes off of their 1984 album Powerslave but I first heard it when my brother bought their Live After Death Album along with Metallica's Kill 'Em All album when I was 5 years old. That day was the day I became a Metalhead for life! \m/

Fridays with Freddie: The Birth of Thrash Metal

Alright, let's play one that the audience will enjoy. Today I'm reminding you that it's not subjective that Queen is rock legend, it's documented and corroborated. Today's track, Stone Cold Crazy, is a precursor to speed metal. It has been described as "thrash metal before the term was invented" by music magazine "Q". It's been covered by Metallica, remixed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and has made Guitar Hero that much more entertaining.

Need more proof? I know you've heard the song, but watch these videos and enjoy watching metal take its first steps in Queen's 1974 live performance; and then witness metal's high school reunion where it realizes that it turned out okay and is actually pretty awesome as James Hetfield performs the song live with Queen and Tony Iommi at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.

Do you need another reason to love this song? Fine. It was also on the Encino Man soundtrack. Why is that CD $21.99? Oh Snap! There's only one left in stock!

It's a great example of why I love Queen so much. You can get speed metal, pop, epic ballads, love
songs, arena rock and more. I can't name a current band that is currently doing what Queen did, and don't bother correcting me because the fact that I don't immediately think of the band you're about to counter with proves my point. Everyone knows Queen, when I was in kindergarten I remember a school assembly where everyone stomp-clapped "We Will Rock You". I was 5, 5 year-olds don't know anything but I knew "We Will Rock You" and I knew it was awesome.

Long live Queen.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Vermillion by Slipknot

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by the guys from Iowa. Slipknot is a 9 piece band well known for their costumes and stage performances. This song comes off of what I think is their best album, Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) which came out in 2004.

Sadly, in 2010 their bassist, Paul Gray, passed away. So far they have not replaced him in the band. It is yet to be determined if they will finish writing and recording a 5th album.

Funny story about Slipknot. I got married on June 21st in 2008 and Slipknot's last album was released in August of 2008. Check out a pic from my wedding compared to the album cover.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Mile Zero by Periphery

Today's Metal Track comes from Periphery off of their most recent album, Periphery II: This Time it's Personal. This song features a solo by Wes Hauch from the band The Faceless.

I love the opening of this song. The riffs and the vocals flow together very well.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Lovely by Suicidal Tendencies

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Suicidal Tendencies. This is another one off of their 1990 album, Lights, Camera, Revolution. You can see that Rob Trujillo (Now in Metallica) has a little captain in him on the album cover. These guys were one of the best at blending metal and funk/hip-hop and this song exemplifies that.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Sibylline Origin by Jeff Loomis

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is brought to you by Jeff Loomis off of his 2012 album, Plains of Oblivion. This is a special demo of the song he did for EMG TV because Jeff uses EMG pickups.

Jeff was in the band Nevermore for 20 years alongside Chris Broderick (Now in Megadeth) and now focuses on solo work.

Easy Like Sunday Morning - Without You by Motley Crue

This week's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track brought to you by Motley Crue and is dedicated to my wife, Jessica, on her birthday.

I totally stole these lyrics and used them in letters to mac on her back in high school. All I can say is, it worked!

Weekend Wildcard - Porcelina of the Vast Oceans by The Smashing Pumpkins

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by The Smashing Pumpkins. This is an absolutely beautiful song off of one of the greatest albums ever, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. This double disc masterpiece was on constant rotation in my CD player while I was in high school.

This is my favorite song off of the double album which is saying a lot when the album contains the songs 1979, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight.

Free for All Fridays: Justin Timberlake does Metal

This video comes from Andy Rehfeldt.  He takes a variety of songs and changes the genre around.  In this video he takes Suit and Tie from Justin Timberlake and makes it a metal song.  I happen to like the new JT cd, but this version of Suit and Tie is pretty awesome.

When you get a chance check out a couple of his other videos, like the Radio Disney version of Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Sleeper Awakes by Valient Thorr

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Valient Thorr. These guys call NC home and originated out of Greenville, NC. This is off of their 2010 album, Stranger.

This is a hilarious video. You can see that it was filmed in Raleigh by all of the shots of Downtown including one at the corner of Salisbury Street and Martin Street with the construction in the background.

Interesting cover song...

As much as I love Tears For Fears, I had no idea these guys were still playing music.  Not only that, but they covered another of my favorite band's favorite track.  I'm not saying I'm "head over heels" for this, but it is interesting and worth the listen nonetheless.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Hangman's Body Count by Volbeat

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by the boys from Denmark, Volbeat. This is off of their latest album from earlier this year, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies.

The song is about someone who is about to be hung for the crimes they have committed. Now they are part of the Hangman's body count.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Miasma by The Black Dahlia Murder

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by The Black Dahlia Murder. This is a pretty brutal one. This is the title track off of their 2005 album, Miasma.

Miasma, refers to noxious exhalations from putrescent organic matter; poisonous effluvia or germs polluting the atmosphere.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Panic Attack by Dream Theater

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Dream Theater off their 2005 album, Octavarium.

This album was based on the concept of an octave which consists of 8 naturals and 5 accidentals. This was their 8th album to go along with their 5 live albums. Each of the 8 tracks on the album were written in a different key.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Call of Ktulu by Metallica

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is brought to you by Metallica. This is the closing track on their 1984 album, Ride the Lightning. Hard to believe this album will be 30 years old next year.

The title is based upon H. P. Lovecraft's book The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Cliff Burton was a big fan of Lovecraft and introduced it to the rest of the band. "Ktulu" was originally spelled "Cthulhu".

RIP Cliff

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Murder in the City by The Avett Brothers

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is brought to you by the The Avett Brothers. This comes off of their 2008 EP, The Second Gleam. The brothers are from Concord, NC.

"Always remember there was nothing worth sharing, like the love that let us share our name."

Weekend Wildcard - L'via L'Viaquez by The Mars Volta

This Weekend's Wildcard comes from The Mars Volta. This is a funky little jam off of their second album, Frances the Mute. Unfortunately, the band broke up last year and have moved on to other projects.

This song makes me want to brush up on my High School Spanish.

Stone's Mood Music Tour! FINALE!

This is such a good song that I ended up purchasing the whole album and am not disappointed one bit!

Beach House - Myth

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 5 Part 2

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Falling Snow by Agalloch

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by the guys from Portland, Agalloch. This comes off of their 2006 album Ashes Against the Grain.

"This song is basically about the cycle of life, death and decay. The mountain is built of red birds (former living things) that have died and fallen as snow to form the mountain. The 'character' in the song is now embracing the same fate, to be frozen in time forever in the mountain."

Fridays with Freddie: Epic Crowd Control Edition

I'm back! Scott sucks! In other news, it's Friday, and that means (most of the time) I've got your weekly dose of Queen. And what a dose it is. You can digest this post in two ways:

1. Skip to 22:38 and watch Freddie Mercury prove that he's one of the greatest frontmen in music history.

2. Watch the full 2 hour 1986 concert Live At Wembley Stadium and watch Freddie Mercury prove that he's one of the greatest frontmen in music history.

Let me focus on timestamp 22:38 While the last few editions have been slightly more obscure and maybe even new to some, this one is a standard in any Queen playlist. Set the scene, it's July 12th, 1986, you're in a massive sea of people at Wembley Stadium holding a ticket to one of Queen's greatest and final tours, the "A Kind of Magic" tour. At the 22:38 mark Mercury interacts with the crowd before launching into "Under Pressure".

Seriously, just watch and then tell me that you're not at all sad that you'll never get to experience that live. When Scott builds a time machine, this is one of the first points in history that I'm going to make him take me. Long Live Queen!

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 5

So, this band puts out some pretty weird stuff.  If you don't believe me, watch the video for Agoraphobia!  However, this song is pretty catchy and in the vibe of the whole modern mood motif.  I just love alliteration!

Deerhunter - Helicopter

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 4 Part 2

If you haven't heard of Purity Ring then you are one pathetic loser!!!!  Just kidding!  No one has heard of these guys before, that's why I'm posting them here.  This is a really good song.

Purity Ring - Fineshrine

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Forty Six & 2 by Tool

Today's Meal Track comes from Tool. This song relates to the Jungian theory and different chromosome compositions that impact our consciousness. Our current level is 44 + 2 which is believed to be a stepping stone in evolution to the next level of 46 + 2.

According to Drunvalo Melchizadek, these two additional chromosomes change everything. Pretty deep stuff. Read more about geometrically constructed 'morpho genetic grids' and their relative levels of consciousness here.

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 4

I dare anyone to listen to this and tell me that this isn't the best song you've heard all day.  Sure, it may be 8 in the morning, but this is perfect for getting your day started right and with a giant smile on your face.

Com Truise - Brokendate

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 3 Part 2

Ok, this is a little off the beaten path of the other posts but it is very hard to listen to this and not feel happy... so suck it up, listen, and LIKE IT!!!!!!!

Foxygen - San Francisco

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - I Don't Know by Ozzy Osbourne

Today's Metal Track is I Don't Know. I mean, I do know and the name of the song is "I Don't Know".

This is the opening track on Ozzy's comeback solo album, Blizzard of Ozz. Ozzy was a real mess after being kicked out of Black Sabbath and then Randy Rhoads came along and resurrected his career.

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 3

There are many songs by Naked and Famous to choose from... Punching in a Dream, Youngblood, and Girls Like You come to mind.  So why not just go with something brand spanking new!!?  If you like this, make sure to look up the other songs!

Naked and Famous - Hearts Like Ours

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 2 Part 2

M83 is incredible.  Nuff said.  Oh, and also because it's too hard to tell which of these songs is better!

M83 - Midnight City

M83 - Reunion

Kyle Stories - Ole' Nessie

We convinced Kyle to ride the Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens one year. He started crying after the first drop off and ended up peeing his pants. He now wears depends to theme parks and any place that has escalators.

Stone's Mood Music Tour! Day 2

How can one not think this is awesome??

I Break Horses - Denial

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Oroborus by Gojira

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by our environmentally conscious friends from France, Gojira. This is the opening track off of their 2008 album, The Way of All Flesh.

The Oroborus is the ancient Egyptian symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its on tail. It is a symbol of self-reflexivity or cyclicality, in the sense of regeneration or constantly recreating one's self.

Stone's Mood Music Tour!

Ok, turn down the lights after a long day at work and get ready to be at peace with some tracks from the most soul soothing indy artists that you have never heard of... until now.  Also good music if ya got a laaaady ensnared.

Washed Out - Feel It All Around

Kyle Stories - Thumb Wrestling

When Kyle was younger he liked to go #2 in the woods and use leaves for toilet paper. Well one time he used a poison ivy leaf and well, let's just say we didn't want to play thumb wrestling with him for awhile.

Instrumental Mondays: Unearth - Big Bear and the Hour of Chaos

This track is from the guys in Unearth.  Unearth was part of the wave of metal bands coming out in the late 90s early 2000's.  Bands like Killswitch Engage, All that Remains, Shadows Fall, and the Red Chord all formed about the same time and in some cases switched band members numerous times amongst one another.

This track is an instrumental track from III: In The Eyes Of Fire.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Jordan by Buckethead

Today's Instrumental Metal track comes from everyone's favorite KFC-bucket-wearing guitarist, Buckethead. He says he wears the bucket and the FUNERAL bumper stick to remember the genocide committed by KFC each year.

No matter what your stance is on the chicken industry, it doesn't change the fact that this dude can play. You probably remember this as an unlockable track from the Guitar Hero 2 game.

Easy Like Sunday Morning - Times of Trouble by Temple of the Dog

This week's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track comes from Temple of the Dog. This was a side project consisting of members from Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Mother Love Bone. This was actually before Pearl Jam was formed.

This was a tribute album for Andrew Wood, the singer of Mother Love Bone who died from a heroin overdose in 1990. He and Chris Cornell were previously  roommates. This album has many other great songs including the hits Hunger Strike and Say Hello 2 Heaven.

Kyle Stories - Eclair

When Kyle was younger, we once gave him a dog turd and told him it was an eclair. He's so gullible. And by younger I mean 20 yrs old.

Weekend Wildcard - Set 'Em Up Joe by Vern Gosdin

This Weekend's Wildcard is brought to you by the Voice, Vern Gosdin. Gasp!!! Yes, a country song. I do like good old country music just not the stuff that is popular today.

This song spoke to me as a child. "I'm gonna spend the night like every night before, Playin' ET and I'll play him some more". That's what I'm talking about Vern! What I didn't realize at the time was that Vern was referring to country singer Ernest Tubb and not the Atari game E.T. Oh well, it's still a great song.

Kyle Stories - Rocket Man

Since Kyle has abandoned us here, we will post daily embarrassing stories from Kyle's childhood until he comes back.

Kyle always wanted to be an astronaut when he was younger but he lacked the desire to do the necessary school work. He did enjoy playing with his dog however and discovered a compromise. Let's just say that South Park did not develop the first red rocket.

Feel free to share your favorite Kyle stories.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Delirium Trigger by Coheed and Cambria

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Coheed and Cambria off of their debut album, Second Stage Turbine Blade.

I've read many different interpretations of this song but I think it revolves around Coheed being infected with the Monstar virus then turning into the Monstar and killing everyone on the ship. If you want to dig further start here: http://forums.cobaltandcalcium.com/showthread.php?19219-What-is-Delirium-Trigger-About

Friday Challenge: Post or comment a better 80's video

Free For All Fridays: What's been on my iPod??

I've been out a couple of weeks but wanted to post and give everyone a taste of what I've been listening to recently. It's a wide variety of things but here are my top three in no particular order.

Twelve Foot Ninja - Coming for You.  These guys are from Australia. Very cool mix of metal and funk.

Bon Iver - Perth.  This is the opening track from their self titled release.  These guys have a North Carolina connection as Justin Vernon spent some time in Raleigh and one of their drummers is from NC and went to school at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Coheed and Cambria - Number City.  This is from Coheed's latest album Afterman: Descension.  As with all of Coheed's albums there is an underlying story to each of the albums which make up a larger story called the Amory Wars.  If you have time to kill and are interested in the story behind the music then try going here.  You'll find plenty of info on the stories.

Hope you enjoyed these. Comment below and let me know your thoughts. Hopefully next week I'll be a little more consistent with my posts!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Dirty Black Summer by Danzig

Today's Metal Track comes from Danzig. This comes off of their 3rd album, Danzig III: How the Gods Kill, which was released in 1992.

Danzig is pretty awesome but he is also a weird dude. Here is a funny story about him and his bricks and a pic of him buying kitty litter:

And finally, here is the music video:

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Swollen and Halo by Baroness

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Baroness off of their 2009 album Blue Record. In 2013, this album was named the 20th Greatest Metal Album in History by LA Weekly. I love this album but 20th best in the history if Metal might be a bit much.

Anyway, enjoy this track and check out the rest of the album as well.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Weak and Powerless by A Perfect Circle

Today's Metal Track comes from A Perfect Circle off of their 2003 album 13th Step. This concept album revolves around the various processes of addiction. 13th step is a reference to the 12 step program used in Alcoholics Anonymous.

The songs on the album are sung form different perspectives. Some from the user, some from the drug, and some from outsiders. This song is from the perspective of a heroin user as evident in the line "Jam another dragon down the hole" which is a reference to chasing the dragon or trying to reach that first high experienced from your first dose.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Perpetual Burn by Jason Becker

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is brought to you by the amazingly talented Jason Becker. This is the title track off of his 1988 album Perpetual Burn. He played with Marty Friedman in the band Cacophany at the age of 16 before going solo.

Unfortunately, at the age of 20 he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and hasn't really been able to play since. Today he has to communicate with his eyes but he can still use a computer to compose music. You have to wonder what could  have been if he was able to fulfill his full potential.

I couldn't find a version showing Jason playing it but Jeff Loomis covered earlier this year so check that one out.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Nutshell by Alice In Chains

This week's Easy Like Sunday Morning track comes from Alice in Chains. This is an acoustic version of Nutshell from their MTV Unplugged show.

This was one of Layne Staley's last performances before going into seclusion which ended in his death almost 6 years later from a drug overdose. I still remember the day I heard the news. RIP Layne :(

Stone's Artist of the Week: Chvrches #1

#1- The Mother We Share

Ok, so this is THE song that made me a fan and not immediately change the station when I see their name come across the dial.  I think this is a great song, it's very catch, and it is sung by Lauren Mayberry which is why I am posting the live version.  Laureny Mayberry, everyone!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun by Anthrax (Beavis and Butthead Exp.)

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by Anthrax. This is a cover of a 1989 Beastie Boys song that they did for the Beavis and Butthead Experience compilation album that came out in 1993. It includes a 4 minute skit before the song that is hilarious.

I played this album so many times when I was younger that I can probably quote most of the Beavis and Butthead dialogue to this day.

Settle down Beavis

Stone's Artist of the Week: Chvrches #2

#2- I Would Die 4 You

Yes, this is the I Would Die 4 You that you are thinking of.  This was quite a risk as it is a tough song to pull off without making the Prince fan turn up there nose.  Again, more Lauren Mayberry.  You're welcome.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Cosmic Monsters Inc. by White Zombie

Today's Metal Track is brought to you by White Zombie off of their 1992 album La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1. This has always been one of my favorite Zombie songs. It's a shame it didn't get as much recognition as some of their other hits.

I couldn't find a youtube clip with just Cosmic Monsters on it but I did find it coupled with the following track on the album "Spiderbaby". So I guess this a 2 for 1 deal. Enjoy!
