Scott's Metal Track of the Day - (We Are) The Road Crew by Motorhead

One more in the honor of the late great Lemmy Kilmister. Today's Metal Track is (We Are) The Road Crew by Motorhead. This is off of their 1980 album Ace of Spades. This is a tribute song to all the hard working roadies out there on tour. Something Lemmy knows first hand from his experience as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix in the 60s.

"Another beer is what I need
Another gig, my ears bleed
We are the road crew"

RIP Lemmy!!!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Born to Raise Hell by Motorhead

I'm getting tired of these RIP posts :(

In honor of the passing of legendary frontman Lemmy Kilmister, today's Metal Track is Born to Raise Hell by Motorhead. The song features guest vocalists Ice-T and Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe). This is from their 1993 album Bastards and it was also used in the film Airheads. Lemmy also made a cameo appearance in the film. Make sure you watch the end of the video for a funny clip from the movie about Lemmy.

Lemmy found out on December 26th that he had cancer and passed away two days later. Here's to 70 years of Raising Hell!!!
RIP Lemmy!!!

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Sara Smile by Hall & Oates

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Sara Smile by Hall & Oates. This is off of their 1974 self-titled album Daryl Hall & John Oates. I was inspired to post this after it came on the juke box this morning at Waffle House.

This song was the duo's first Top 10 hit in the US. The song She's Gone which was recorded prior to this song, broke the top 10 but not until after it was re-released by Atlantic Records in 1976.

Weekend Wildcard - Always Something There to Remind Me by Naked Eyes

This Weekend's Wildcard is Always Something There to Remind Me by Naked Eyes. This is off of their 1983 debut album Burning Bridges so I guess this video was before the album was released. I did not realize this was a cover a song written 20 years prior. It was first written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David in the 1960s. Naked Eyes put a synthpop spin on it which IMHO is the best version.

Today's Metal Track is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by the legendary duo of Dio and Tony Iommi. This was released in 2008 on a compilation album titled We Wish You a Metal Xmas and a Headbanging New Year.

As the top YouTube comments states, "Dio could sing his grocery list and it would sound good."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - First Regret / 3 Years Older by Steven Wilson

Today's Metal Track is First Regret/3 Years Older by Steven Wilson. This is the opening track off of his album Hand. Cannot. Erase. which came out earlier this year. This is more rock than metal but who cares, it's my birthday. I do what I want!

If you are impatient like my son and keep asking "Why is it not rocking Dad?" go ahead and fast forward to about the 2:30 mark.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Deathray by Devin Townsend

Today's Metal Track is Deathray by Devin Townsend. This is another one off of his fantastic double album Z². This is off of the second disc titled Dark Matters. If you remember from previous posts this album is about intergalactic warfare involing Earth, Ziltoid, the War Princess and her Poozers. The War Princess wants to take over Earth to get its coffee.

I would absolutely love to catch his live performance of this album along with past Ziltoid work.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Celestial Effigy by Agalloch

Today's Metal Track is Celestial Effigy by Agalloch. This is off of their 2014 album The Serpent and The Sphere. The opening quote comes form Ralph Wald Emerson's poem Fragments of Nature and Life.

Teach me your mood, O patient stars!
Who climb each night the ancient sky,
Leaving on space no shade, no scars,
No trace of age, no fear to die.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Frank Sinatra

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Frank Sinatra. This was originally written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane for the 1944 movie Meet Me in St. Louis where it was performed by Judy Garland. Sinatra recorded this version in 1957 for his album A Jolly Christmas.

Sinatra had Martin alter the lyrics slightly to "jolly it up". He revised the line "Until then we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Hang a shining star upon the highest bough."

Weekend Wildcard - Christmas in Hollis by Run-D.M.C.

It's Christmas time in Hollis, Queens
Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa puttin' gifts under Christmas trees

This Weekend's Wildcard is Christmas in Hollis by Run-D.M.C. This 1987 single was released on two different Christmas compilation albums, A Very Special Christmas and Christmas Rap. I'm pretty sure we had A Very Special Christmas when I was growing up because I remember the album cover.

The title refers to the neighborhood in Queens, NY where the members grew up. The song samples numerous Christmas songs such as Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, and Joy to the World.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day (Hosted by Kyle Lott) - Star Wars Medley by the Galactic Empire

In honor of the opening of the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, today's Metal Track is a Star Wars medley by the Galactic Empire. Who knew the epic music, originally composed by John Williams, that brought this timeless saga to life could be re-imagined in such an epic (and brutal) way. May the metal be with you.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden

Today's Metal Track is Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden. This is the title track off of their 1992 album by the same name. Shocker: This song is about someone who is afraid of the dark. The lyrics tell stories of times the man has walked alone and felt that someone was following him.

Have you ever been alone at night
Thought you heard footsteps behind
And turned around and no one's there?
And as you quicken up your pace
You find it hard to look again
Because you're sure there's someone there

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Informal Gluttony by Between the Buried and Me

Today's Metal Track is Informal Gluttony by Between the Buried and Me. This is off of their spectacular 2007 album Colors. This was the breakout album for the band and IMHO, ranks way up there with the greatest heavy metal albums of all time.

Feed me fear... informal
Feed me fear... gluttony

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Laid to Rest by Lamb of God

Today's Metal Track is Laid to Rest by Lamb of God. This is the opening track off of their 2004 album Ashes of the Wake. The song is told from the perspective of someone who has been murdered and is haunting their killer in the afterlife.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Wizards in Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Wizards in Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This is off of their 2004 album The Lost Christmas Eve. This video was recorded in 2005 by electrical engineer Carson Williams. It took him 2 months to complete and he would transmit the song using a FM modulator so people could listen to it when they drove by in their cars.

Someone took a video of it and posted it to YouTube and it went viral. You can find the original out there still but the quality is not as good as this one.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Last Christmas by Wham!

Not many people know this but when I grow my hair out, it looks exactly like George Michael's hair.

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Last Christmas by Wham! This is off of the British pop duo's 1984 album Music from the Edge of Heaven. Fun fact: This video was the last time George Michael did not have a beard.

Weekend Wildcard - Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today) by Extreme

This Weekend's Wildcard is Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today) by Extreme. This is off of their 1989 debut self-titled album. I heard this on the radio today and learned something new. Before Extreme, some of the band members were in a band called the The Dream. So the name Extreme is a derivation of the old name meaning Ex-Dream.

The good news is no one should have to go to school today!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day (Guest Host Stone) - The Way We Die by Devil You Know

Filling in for Scott, the Metal Track of the Day is The Way We Die from Devil You Know. Most people know Howard from Killswitch Engage and how he unceremoniously split from the band. The guy is an incredible vocalist and his new gig sounds like a heavier version of KSE, which is alright by me! Their 2nd album just came out in November and is pretty throw down. I submit to thee...

Scott's Metal Track of the Day (Guest Host Mike) - Seven Days by Corrosion of Conformity

Today's Metal Track is Seven Days by Corrosion of Conformity. The boys are back home tonight for a concert that marks the first time since 2001 that the Deliverance era line up (Woody, Mike, Reed, and Pepper) has played Raleigh.

Besides being a classic COC track this one has seen them joined on stage by James Hetfield when they opened for Metallica during the '97 Tour. I was in attendance for the Greensboro show and it was the first time I saw both bands live!

Thanks to Scott and Stone for letting me pick the track today.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Testify by Rage Against The Machine

Today's Metal Track is Testify by Rage Against the Machine. This is the opening track off of their 1999 album The Battle of Los Angeles. The lyrics feature are quote from George Orwell's novel 1984: "Who controls the past (now), controls the future. Who control the present (now) controls the past."

The video, directed by Michael Moore, shows two aliens plotting to conquer the earth by "releasing the mutant." That mutant is the combination of Bush and Gore who seemingly have the same policies on important issues. The video demonstrates the lack of choices we have as voters. This came out during the 2000 Presidential race.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Hollow by Pantera

Today marks 11 years since the tragic death of Dimebag Darrell. He was one of the greatest heavy metal guitarist to ever live and one of the most influential guitarist in modern metal. He was known for his great personality and was loved by fans and his peers.

Today's Metal Track is Hollow by Pantera. This is the closing track off of their 1992 album Vulgar Display of Power. It is about a friend who has slipped in to a coma. No one is sure if it is based on a real person or not though.

RIP Dime. Your music and spirit still lives on! \m/

I always think of this when I hear this song:

This one is a cover of a Japanese pop song released in 1986 by the singer Sayuri Ishikawa. Marty has lived in Japan since 2003 and has become really ingrained in Japanese culture.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Loving the Alien by Velvet Revolver

Let's round out the weekend with one more track in honor of Scott Weiland. You probably expected me to pick one of the many STP songs but I'm going a different direction this time.

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Loving the Alien by Velvet Revolver. This is the closing track off of their 2004 debut album Contraband. They were the super group comprised of Guns 'N Roses band members with Scott Weiland on lead vocals.

Many you have probably never heard this underrated song. Scott's vocals on this track are wonderful.

Sometimes is all the time
And never means maybe
Sometimes is all the time
Maybe
And I'm moving on

RIP Scott

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Am I Evil by Diamond Head

Today's Metal Track is Am I Evil by Diamond Head. This is off of the English band's 1980 debut album Lightning to the Nations. It was popular in UK metal circles but later gain international popularity when Metallica covered it and released as a B-side to their 1984 single Creeping Death.

I first heard this song on the 1988 re-released version of Metallica's debut album Kill 'Em All which I still have on cassette. If you buy the album now, it doesn't include this cover or their cover of Blitzkrieg.

During the Big 4 concert back in 2010, members of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax closed the show with a partial performance of this song. I remember laughing at Joey Belladonna butchering the lyrics.

Here is Metallica's cover:

And here is the Big 4 cover:

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Fatal Illusion by Megadeth

Today's Metal Track is Fatal Illusion by Megadeth. This is the first single released off of their upcoming album Dystopia scheduled to be released in January. This song got me really excited for the new album because it sounds more like the Megadeth I am accustomed to. The most recent album, Super Collider, was big disappointment.

Another reason I am excited about the upcoming album is the addition of Chris Adler from Lamb of God. He is one of the best drummers in metal. Don't worry, he is not leaving LOG. He replaces Shawn Drover on drums who left the band last year along with guitarist Chris Broderick.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - % by Cloudkicker

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is % by Cloudkicker. This is off of his 2010 album ]]][[[. It only consists of 3 songs. This one, $, and #. Ben always finds a unique and interesting way to name his albums and songs. I would have fun coming up with funny titles to instrumental songs. Like an album named Phrasing with Archer like phrasings for song titles.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - How Deep Is Your Love by Bee Gees

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is How Deep Is Your Love by Bee Gees. The three brothers wrote this song for the soundtrack of the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. It was one of many songs they wrote for the soundtrack.

The band wasn't even involved in the movie until after it was filmed. Travolta was dancing to Stevie Wonder and Bob Scaggs songs during filming. The soundtrack became the highest selling soundtrack of all time before being surpassed by The Bodyguard in 1992.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Eulogy by Tool

Are you thankful for metal like I am? Today's Metal Track is Eulogy by Tool. This is off of their 1996 album Aenima. I'm not sure why this person chose the 10,0000 Days album cover for this video.

He had a lot to say.
He had a lot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.
So long.

We wish you well.
Maybe this song will wake you up from your turkey coma.

Today's Metal Track is Imperium by Machine Head. This is the opening track off of their 2003 album Through the Ashes of Empires. I don't have this album but I swear I've heard this track a lot. I can't figure out where I would have heard it from. It's not like it was all over the radio.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Tonight's the Night by Rod Stewart

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Tonight's the Night (Gonna be Alright) by Rod Stewart. This is off of his 1976 album A Night on the Town. Watch a young Rod Stewart put the smooth moves on a young French girl in this video.

The not so subtle lyrics are a clear indicator of Rod's intentions. When the song came out, many radio stations would shorten the song and edit out the French whispers at the end because it was too suggestive for airplay. Her comment "What is Mama going to say?" make her appear as a minor.

Weekend Wildcard - Just A Friend by Biz Markie

Oh Baby You...

Got What I Need...

This Weekend's Wildcard is Just A Friend by Biz Markie. This is off of his 1989 album The Biz Never Sleeps. The song is basically a cover of Freddie Scott's 1968 song You Got What I Need but with altered lyrics and additional verses. Since this is his only hit, it is considered a one-hit-wonder.

Here is Freddie Scott's version:

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Oblivion by Mastodon

Today's Metal Track is Oblivion by Mastodon. This is the opening track off of their 2009 album Crack the Skye. This is just a great overall song with a catchy chorus and great sound. I wish I could get that sound out of my guitar. That solo at about the 2:55 mark is just beautiful.

Fallen from grace cause I been away too long
Leaving you behind with my lonesome song
Now I'm lost in oblivion

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Sara by Starship. This is off of the band's 1985 debut album Knee Deep in the Hoopla. Starship was a continuation of the band Jefferson Starship. There were enough changes in personnel and style that they decided to rename the band. This song was written by Peter and Ina Wolf but it was titled after singer Mickey Thomas's wife at the time.

No time is a good time for goodbye!

Weekend Wildcard - I Want You So Hard by Eagles of Death Metal

It is with sadness that I bring you this Weekend's Wildcard. This is I Want You So Hard by Eagles of Death Metal. This is the band that was performing at the Paris night club Le Bataclan last night when terrorist came in and opened gunfire in the packed club killing around 100 people.

The band members made it out but some of the crew is still unaccounted for. God bless the victims and their families. :(

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - One by Metallica

Today's Metal Track is One by Metallica. If you've never heard this before, come out from under that rock you are living under and rock out! This is off of their 1988 album ...And Justice For All. The song is based on the book Johnny Got His Gun about a quadruple amputee war veteran. The video contains scenes and dialogue from the 1971 film adaptation of that book.

This was the first video ever released by Metallica and IMHO is still their best video. When this came out many fans were upset because they felt the band had sold out. It definitely gained them a larger fan base that would only skyrocket 3 years later with the release of the Black Album.

When they play this live they open with a couple of minutes of pyrotechnics that simulate being on the battlefield. I was in the pit back in 2003 and during one of the explosions a piece of duct tape landed on me and my brother that was still extremely hot. (Cool story bro)

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr by Trivium

Today's Metal Track is Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr by Trivium. This is off of their 2005 album Ascendancy. Singer Matt Heafy said that this song "is a look at a villainous tyrant; one who can simply kill and destroy on will, push his faith upon all, be hated by all other powers around - and still be loved by many that he rules."

The band released a new album just last month. Matt Heafy blew out his voice in 2014 so he can't scream like he did in the past like on this song. It hasn't quite grown on me yet because of that. Maybe it will one day but to me this will always be Trivium. A great mix of screaming and clean vocals.

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Therapy by Infectious Grooves

Today's Metal Track is Therapy by supergroup Infectious Grooves. This is off of their 1991 debut album The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move...It's the Infectious Grooves. The band consisted of Mike Muir and Rob Trujillo from Suicidal Tendencies, Adam Siegel from Excel, and Stephen Perkins from Janes Addiction. For this song, they pulled in Ozzy for a guest vocal appearance. The only lyric he sings is "Therapy" but it's definitely an important one.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - No Woman, No Cry by Bob Marley & The Wailers

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is No Woman, No Cry. This live version, recorded in London in 1975, is the most popular version of the song. It was first released on the 1974 album Natty Dread. It is about convincing a woman living in the ghetto that things would get better and to not cry. The second no in the title and chorus is pronounce "nuh" and is the equivalent of "don't".

Marley gave songwriting credits to his friend Vincent Ford who owned a soup kitchen in the ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica where he grew up. Vincent used the royalty money to keep his soup kitchen going.

This Weekend's Wildcard is Take On Me by the Norwegian synthnpop group a-ha. It comes from the band's 1985 debut album Hunting High and Low. This was the band's 3rd recorded version of this song with the first two not becoming very popular.

This is one of the very best pop songs and videos of all time. The video took home 6 awards and was nominated for 2 others at the 1986 MTV Music Awards.

Family Guy paid tribute to the video in this great clip.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Soulitude by Overkill

Today's Metal Track is Soulitude by Overkill. This is the closing track off of their outstanding 1991 album Horrorscope. A thrash metal ballad? You got that right! This song starts off pretty slow but then unleashes the beast that is Blitz on vocals. One of the best of all time.

I remember here, thought it was a dream
I never thought I'd come to this
Living with the fear, now I know what it means
I never thought it'd end like this
Falling with no end
Into what I've only done to me
With messages to send
Out of what I've only done to me
Falling with no, calling with no
Crawling to the end

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Serrana by Jason Becker

Today's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day is Serrana by Jason Becker. This song has been around in various forms since his time with Cacophony but he never recorded it on guitar for an album. This clip is taken from his 1989 90 minute long guitar clinic. Shortly after this clinic, he was diagnosed with ALS. This was his last recording of the song :(.

The song was later released on his 1996 album Perspective in an orchestral trumpet version.

Here is a cover version of the song by Max Arminchiardi off the 2002 tribute album Warmth in the Wilderness.

Scott's Track of the Day - It's Finally Friday by George Jones

I know I normally post metal Tracks on Friday's but I'm going to make an exception today because you can't play this song on any other day than Friday!

Today's Track is It's Finally Friday by The Possum, Mr. George Jones. This is the closing track off of his 1992 album Walls Can Fall.

Monday, I'll be hurtin with my head in a vice
Tuesday, I'll be wonderin' if I'll ever survive
Wednesday and Thursday, I'll be slowly tunin' in
Friday, I'll be revin' up my motor again.

RIP

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Paranoid by Black Sabbath

Today's Metal Track is Paranoid by Black Sabbath. It is the title track off of their 1970 of the same name. This is one of the most popular metal songs of all time. The only problem is that his has been played so many times that you can get tired of it. Kind of like Enter Sandman.

Geezer said that the song was really an afterthought when recording the album and they needed a 3 minute filler song. The original title of the album was supposed to be War Pigs after the first track on the album but the record company made them change it because it was controversial.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Evil Twin by Anthrax

Today's Metal Track is Evil Twin by Anthrax. This is a brand new single from their upcoming album which will be released in early 2016. This will be the first album to feature Jonathan Donais on lead guitar as he is pulling double duty playing for both Anthrax and his original band Shadows Fall.

I had a wake board growing up named Evil Twin (Cool story bro).

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Syndic Calls by Isis

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Syndic Calls by Isis. This is off of their 2004 album Panopticon. This song does have lyrics but it still feels like an instrumental.

From the comments: "A "syndic" was a street authority in plague-stricken Europe who made sure everyone was locked in their houses, who kept watch and reported to superiors if the plague was spreading. For the lyrics, the "syndic calls" you, because you have the plague."

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain by Willie Nelson

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. This is off of his 11975 concept album Red Headed Stranger. While this song is often credited to Willie, it was actually written by Fred Rose and recorded by Roy Acuff in 1945. It was also record by Hank Williams Sr. and Elvis Presley among other performers.

The footage in this video is taken from the 1986 film Red Headed Stranger based on the album. In the film, Willie portrays a preacher who kills his wife and the man she ran off with.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Until You Call on the Dark by Danzig

I just realized that it has been a years since I've posted Danzig. We've got to fix that.

Today's Metal Track is Until You Call on the Dark by Danzig. This is off of their 1994 album Danzig 4. We had this album on cassette when I was growing up but I don't remember this video.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Nemesis by Arch Enemy

Today's Metal Track is Nemesis by Swedish metal band Arch Enemy. This is the first single off of their 2005 album Doomsday Machine. This was during the Angela Gossow era of Arch enemy. She was the lead singer from 2000 until 2014.

Shortly after this album, Christopher Amott left the band for only to return 2 years later. During that time, he was replaced by Fredrik Akesson who went on to join Opeth when Amott returned.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Crows in Swine by Red Fang

Today's Metal Track is Crows in Swine by Red Fang. This is off of their 2013 album Whales and Leeches. This is a pretty awesome video. I need to find a magical necklace to summon the powers of the great Red Fang. I don't know which one is better, Killer Kitties or La-Z-Boy Superhero.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - What Lies Beneath by Andy James

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is What Lies Beneath by Andy James. This is off of his 2011 self-titled album. Andy is a guitar instructor and run the Andy James Guitar Academy. He also was the lead guitarist in the short lived UK band Sacred Mother Tongue.

Easy Like Sunday Morning - Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler

Turn around...

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. This fantastic song is off of the Welsh singer's 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night. Her raspy voice is a perfect fit for this classic song.

If you are like me, you can't hear this song and not immediate think about The Dan Band's version from the movie Old School. One of the funniest scenes in movie history. I think that movie introduced the song to a whole new generation.

Here is the Dan Band Scene from Old School. At the end of the clip the band is performing Lady by Styx which is another classic.

Weekend Wildcard - Are You Ready for Freddy by Fat Boys (Guest host Kyle)

Happy Halloween! I'm filling in for Scott today, lucky you!

The 80's and 90's gave us a load of horror themed rap: Elvira's Monster Rap, MC Hammer's Addams' Groove, Tag Team's Addams Family Whoomp! (yes it was a thing), and more; but none make me more nostalgic for trick-r-treating than today's Weekend Wildcard.

This gem should be on every Halloween party playlist and features 1980's favorite sweater clad horror icon. Are you hoping for the classic "Nightmare on My Street" by Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff? Sorry, no official video was ever released since the movie studio wasn't a fan of this unofficial homage to Elm Street. In fact they ordered the footage to be destroyed and required disclaimer stickers be placed on the upcoming album disassociating the song with the franchise.

Today we're celebrating October with a New Line sanctioned track, the Nightmare on Elm Street 4 soundtrack hit featuring The Fat Boys and a rap performance by Robert Englund. Amazingly this isn't Freddy's only musical endeavor. In 1987 he released an entire album with The Elm Street Group and it's bonkers.

This video is a reminder that a brutal serial killer with knife hands was once so beloved and entrenched in pop culture that he invaded toy stores, MTV, and practically had his own Saturday morning cartoon.

"Don't fall asleep!"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - High Country by The Sword

Today's Metal Track is High Country  by The Sword. This is the title track from their upcoming album by the same name. This song is a little more mellow than their traditional sound but I still like it. You can see the numerous complaints about it in the YouTube comments.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Gravemakers and Gunslingers by Coheed and Cambria

Today's Metal Track is Gravemakers and Gunslingers by Coheed and Cambria. This is off of their 2007 album Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Repentless by Slayer

Today's Metal Track is Repentless by Slayer. This is the title track off of their latest album released just last month. This is a pretty brutal video guest starring Danny Trejo. Seems like the inmates would have been much better off working together. Also, Tom Araya is showing his age with that gray beard.

This is the first Slayer album following Jeff Hanneman's death in 2013. He was replaced by Gary Holt of Exodus. This was also the first album since 2001 to feature Paul Bostaph on drums. He replaced Dave Lombardo who left the band due to contract disputes.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Chlorine and Wine by Baroness

Today's Metal Track is Chlorine and Wine by Baroness. This is off of their upcoming album Purple which will be released on December 18. These guys continue to evolve and mature their sound with every album. This is a beautiful song that builds throughout. John's vocals are great and I really enjoy the part towards the end where they are all singing together.

Please
Don't lay me down
Under the rocks where I found
My place in the ground
A home for the fathers and sons

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Erotic Nightmares by Steve Vai

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Erotic Nightmares by Steve Vai. This is an incredible performance taken from his 2003 show in London. The song comes from his 1990 album Passion and Warfare.

Watching this video made me realize that I will never, ever be able to have my hair blow in the wind so miraculously as Steve Vai. I probably actually have a better chance and playing this song.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. This is off of his 1977 album Slowhand. Like Layla, he wrote this song about Pattie Boyd and the time he was waiting on her to get ready to Paul and Linda McCartney's annual Buddy Holly Party.

And holy cow does Eric Clapton not look like Ron Swanson on the cover for the single?

Weekend Wildcard - Winner Takes it All by Sammy Hagar

This Weekend's Wildcard comes from the best (and maybe only) arm wrastlin' movie there ever was. This is Winner Takes it All by Sammy Hagar from the soundtrack for Over the Top. The song was sang by John Wetton (Asia) for the movie but Sammy Hagar performed the soundtrack version. It was determined that Wetton's voice wasn't mean enough.

This is not the official video for the song but I like it better than the original.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Gift of Pain by Metal Allegiance

Today's Metal Track is Gift of Pain by Metal Allegiance. This is like a Super Supergroup. The core group consists of Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Alex Skolnick (Testament), and founder Mike Menghi.

These guys invited a ton of metal artist to guest star in varying capacities on their album. A total of 25 artists are in included on their self-titled album released last month. This is the opening track off of that album featuring Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) on vocals and a guest solo by Gary Holt (Exodus).

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Buried by Corrosion of Conformity

Today's Metal Track is Buried by Corrosion of Conformity. This is off of their 1991 album Blind. This was the first album to feature Pepper Keenan on guitar and the only album to feature Karl Agell on vocals. Pepper provided lead vocals on one track on this album; Vote With a Bullet. Due to its popularity, Pepper took over vocal duties following this album. Karl is a decent singer as shown here but Pepper is better in my opinion.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Just Barely Breathing by Killswitch Engage

Are We Alive, Or Just Breathing?!

Today's Metal Track is Just Barely Breathing by Killswitch Engage. This is title track off of their 2002 album Alive or Just Breathing. Jesse wrote this song on a rainy, depressing day. He is asking God to end the world because of all of the evil he sees in people on earth. He wants God to come so he can go to heaven.

The sky weeps tonight
Our bodies washed away
I am waiting for you
Deliverance
The sun falls through the clouds
Hear my cry

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Galaxy by Dethklok

Today's Metal Track is The Galaxy by Dethklok. This off of their 2012 album Dethalbum III. This song was taken from the final episode of Season 3 titled Doublebookedklok. In this episode the band accidentally booked shows in Israel and Syria on the same date, putting the countries at risk of starting a war.

I wonder if the laser pentagram used to attack the spaceship at the end was paying homage to Motley Crue's Looks That Kill music video. In that video Tommy's bass drum shoots a pentagram at one of the girls in the video. See here: https://youtu.be/FToyVkqPW7Y?t=2m38s

Scott's Instrumental Track of the Day - If I Could Fly by Joe Satriani

Today's Instrumental Track is If I Could Fly by Joe Satriani. This is off of his 2004 album Is There Love in Space?. In 2008, Satriani filed a lawsuit against Coldplay claiming that their song Viva la Vida plagiarized "substatial original portions" of this song. It's pretty obvious when you you here it. The two parties eventually settled out of court and the case was dismissed.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Purple Rain by Prince

In continuing with this weekend's rain theme, today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Purple Rain by Prince. This is the title track off of his 1984 album which was the soundtrack of a movie by the same name. The album is commonly ranked as one of the best albums in music history. This video was taken from his performance on the Arsenio Hall show.

I would love to post more of Prince's work on my blog but he is rather protective over his work and doesn't allow it to be shared on YouTube. I think this one is only available because he doesn't own the rights to it.

Weekend Wildcard - Raindrops + Sunshowers by The Smashing Pumpkins

Rain falls on everyone
The same old rain
And I'm just trying to... walk with you... between the rain drops

This Weekend's Wildcard is Raindrops + Sunshowers by The Smashing Pumpkins. This is off of the band's 2000 album Machina/The Machines of God. This was one of the band's least popular albums but I've always liked it. It's no Mellon Collie or Siamese Dream but it's still good.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Eternal Rains Will Come by Opeth

Opeth is not due up in the rotation but I couldn't resist posting this track as I feel it is appropriate for all of this rain we are getting.

Today's Metal Track is Eternal Rains Will Come by Opeth. This is the opening track off of their 2014 album Pale Communion. This song displays the beautiful prog-rock side of Opeth that they perfected on this album. A side that has polarized Opeth fans in recent years. While I like their older death metal style the best, I think this album is amazing.

That intro and the part at 5:20 are top notch!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Still I Rise by Shadows Fall

Today's Metal Track is Still I Rise by Shadows Fall. This is off of their 2009 album Retribution. This is a great song for motivation to get back up when you've been knocked down. Some great riffage and solos as usual with these guys.

Stop searching the sky for answers
And look within
Our greatest gift
Is the life we are given
 ...
Still I rise!
From the ashes
Look Inside
Search for meaning
Truth cannot survive

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Axe by Gojira

Today's Metal Track is The Axe by Gojira. This is off of their 2012 album L'Enfant Sauvage. This song is metaphor about shaping your mind like an axe so that you can cut through anything that is in your way.

"In the dark I've lingered too long
This sharpened axe, beam of light
I reach for and I master
Wield against these shadows"

"All boundaries are illusion
When you reach the center light
And reinforce the striking power"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Dig by Mudvayne

Today's Metal Track is Dig by Mudvayne. This is off of their 2000 debut album L.D. 50. This was the band's first single and is still one of their biggest hits. The video won the 2001 MTV2 award as an honor for the best overall achievement by an act to premier on MTV2.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Blue Sun by Scale The Summit

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Blue Sun by Scale The Summit. I literally just found out that they released a new album when I searched for them on YouTube. This is off of their album V which came out on September 18. Looks like I have to go buy a new album now.

They finally got guitars with headstocks on them! Enjoy!

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Hello by Lionel Richie

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Hello by Lionel Richie. This is the closing track off of his 1983 album Can't Slow Down. The video shows Richie as a teacher who has an infatuation with a blind student. It's a little weird because it seems like a high school with the bells ringing between classes. The bust at the end of the video has been parodied because it doesn't look like Richie. In fact, Jimmy Fallon just recently parodied the video on The Tonight Show.

Weekend Wildcard - Mad World by Tears for Fears

This Weekend's Wildcard is Mad World by Tears for Fears. This was originally released in 1982 and was also on the British band's 1983 debut album The Hurting. It was the band's first international hit.

This track saw a resurgence in 2001 when it was covered by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules for the cult classic film Donnie Darko.

I was inspired to post this after reading Dan Briggs' (Between the Buried and Me) Top 10 List of concept albums.

Here is the cover version

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Ancestral by Steven Wilson

Today's Metal Track is Ancestral by Steven Wilson. This is off of his latest album Hand. Cannot. Erase. which was released earlier this year. This one starts off a little slow but it's worth the wait. If you get impatient, fast forward to 3:30. Like many of Steven's other works, Guthrie Govan provides some wonderful guitar work on this track.

When the world doesn't want you
It will never tell you why
You can shut the door but you can't ignore
The crawl of your decline

You can try if you want to
You can try

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Seven Years Alone by Devil You Know

Today's Metal Track is Seven Years Alone by Devil You Know. This is off of their 2014 debut album The Beauty of Destruction. This is a supergroup highlighted by former Killswitch Engage singer Howard Jones. Looks like they already have another album scheduled to be release sometime this year.

From the YouTube Comments: "Howard is slowly turning into Laurence Fishburne"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Execution/Don't Save Me by Death Angel

Today's Metal Track is Execution/Don't Save Me by Death Angel. This is off of their 2013 album The Dream Calls for Blood. This is just some great thrash metal from this recently revived 80s metal band. I've also included the playthrough which is instrumental only.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Language I: Intuition by The Contortionist

Today's Metal Track is Language I: Intuition by The Contortionist. This is part one of the title track off of their 2014 album Language. This is the band's third album but is the first with vocalist Michael Lessard who joined the band after their former singer left in 2013 after becoming a father. I've only listened to a little bit of their stuff so far but I like it.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Behaving Badly by Animals as Leaders

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Behaving Badly by Animals as Leaders. This is off of their 2009 self-titled debut album. I was listening to this track last night with Adam Satterwhite and realized I had not posted a track by them in awhile.

I hate I missed these guys on their most recent tour with BTBAM. Tosin Abasi is amazing and I've never seen anyone play an 8-String guitar in person before. Hopefully they will come through NC again soon.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Frogs by Alice in Chains

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Frogs by Alice in Chains. This is the acoustic version off of their 1996 album MTV Unplugged. This song was cut from the original MTV broadcast. The original song was released a year earlier on their 1995 self titled album. I think this song is about a friendship that has deteriorated over the years.

The entire song is pretty laid back but the last 2 minutes are so chill.

Weekend Wildcard - Freaks by Live

This Weekend's Wildcard is Freaks by Live. This is off of their 1997 album Secret Samadhi. According to vocalist Ed Kowalczyk, the song "was completely a song about random, abstract notions from the subconscious, not a message of any sort of weight." So don't try to make too much out of the lyrics. However, my favorite part is the "Will you call them gods!"

As for the video, I don't know what this guy's problem is. Milk is awesome and the other people in the video are just trying to help a man out.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Reverie/Harlequin Forest by Opeth

Today's Metal Track is Reverie/Harlequin Forest by Opeth. This is off of their 2005 album Ghost Reveries. This is one of the more accessible songs on the album with mostly clean vocals. Just another example of Opeth's outstanding musicianship!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Great Big White World by Marilyn Manson

Today's Metal Track is Great Big White World by Marilyn Manson. This is the opening track off of his outstanding 1998 album Mechanical Animals. I was hooked on this album the first time I heard this track. It is still my favorite album of his.

Stolen from YouTube comments because it's better than I can explain it: "The song describes Manson as a spaceman, looking down on Earth, and seeing a revolting and depressing sight which is our destroyed world."

In space the stars are no nearer
They just glitter like a morgue
And I dreamed I was a spaceman
Burned like a moth in a flame
And our world was so fucking gone

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Hallways of Enchanted Ebony

Today's Metal Track is Hallways of Enchanted Ebony by Agalloch. This is off of their 1999 debut album Pale Folklore. The title is referring to a forest containing ebony which is a dense black wood. It is so dense that it will sink in water.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Breadfan by Budgie

Today's Metal Track is Breadfan by Budgie. This is opening track off of the band's 1973 album Never Turn Your Back on a Friend. The song is referring to a love of money with bread being a slang term for money.

The song was covered by Metallica in 1988 and released as a B-side on their Harvester of Sorrow single. In was also later included on their 1998 album Garage Inc.

Here is a link to a music video that won't allow embedding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54H3EUAzpVg

Here is the Metallica version. As awesome as the original is, Metallica version is superior IMO.

Scott's Instrumental Track of the Day - Culture Clash by The Aristocrats

Today's Instrumental Track is Culture Clash by The Aristocrats. This is the title track off of their 2013 album by the same name. This is a supergroup consisting of Guthrie Govan, Bryan Bellar (Dethklok), and Marco Minnemann (Steven Wilson's band). This was taken from the DVD that was released with the album.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Hey Jude by The Beatles

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Hey Jude by The Beatles. This song was released as a single in 1968. The song was originally titled Hey Jules because McCartney wrote it to comfort John Lennon's son Julian during his parent's divorce. Clocking in at just over 7 minutes, this song was the longest ever song to top the British charts at the time. It is still the longest running US chart topper in Beatles history spending 9 straight weeks in the number 1 spot.

Weekend Wildcard - Dead and Bloated by Stone Temple Pilots

This Weekend's Wildcard is Dead and Bloated by Stone Temple Pilots. This is the opening track off of their 1992 debut album core. I still have this one on cassette somewhere in the garage. While I think this song is awesome, I'm surprised they went with this as their first single versus the more popular Plush or Creep.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Memory Palace by Between the Buried and Me

They've done it again. The new album is fantastic. These guys just continue to amaze. Their sound continues to mature and evolve. It's a great mix of Prog Rock and Prog Metal. They are on top of their game and in my opinion are the best in the business at the moment.

Today's Metal Track is Memory Palace by Between the Buried and Me. This is off of their newest album Coma Ecliptic which was released earlier this year. This is my current favorite on the album. It combines so many different styles it to one cohesive beautiful song. Tommy's vocals are spectacular with a great mix of clean and growls. One of my favorite parts is at the 5:28 mark when they abruptly change into the "It's over" section.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Without Prejudice by Protest the Hero

Today's Metal Track is Without Prejudice by Protest the Hero. This is off of their 2013 album Volition. This album guest featured Chris Adler (Lamb of God) on drums. This song is about not letting money control you.

Revisions of histories et al. abound.
It flatters me now. It flatters me now…
”Hey spin that song back, it’s my favorite.
It flatters me now. It flatters me now.”

Those lines are about how the band seeks enjoyment, not from money, but from adoration from their fans. especially those who have recorded covers and remakes of their songs.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Delusion Pandemic by Lamb of God

Today's Metal Track is Delusion Pandemic by Lamb of God. This is off of their most recent album, VII: Sturm Und Drang, which was released earlier this year. So far this is my favorite track off of the album.

"Now is the moment when everything can change. You are completely responsible for your own life. And no one is coming to save you from yourself. So stop blaming your problems on any and everything else. It does not matter one tiny bit how unfair you think the world is. Its only what you do. Right here. Right now. Right this instant that matters. It's your choice to... Sink or swim."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry

Today's Metal Track is Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry. This song was released in 1991 and was later included on their 1991 album ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ which is commonly referred to as simply Psalm 69.

Funny story about this song. Gibby, the lead singer of Butthole Suffers, wanted to be on the album so he came into the studio to record. They played the song for him and set him up with a microphone. He was so drunk that all he came up with was the a bunch of gibberish. Al took the recordings and through some magical editing skills pulled out this song.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Meat Hook by Marty Friedman

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Meat Hook by Marty Friedman. This is off of his 2014 album Inferno. There are a few "Heys" thrown in there but it still counts. The saxophone is a little different but I like it.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Don't Cry by Guns 'N Roses

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Don't Cry by Guns 'N Roses. This is off of their 1991 album Use Your Illusions I. They released two versions of this song. The second version with alternate lyrics was on Use You Illusions II which was release simultaneously. There was also a third version of the song that was recorded during the Appetite sessions in 1986. I almost cry when I see Slash throwing that sweet Les Paul off the cliff.

Something I just learned: Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon provides backing vocals on this track and can be seen in the video.

Weekend Wildcard - Radar Love by Golden Earring

This Weekend's Wildcard is Radar Love by Golden Earring. This is off of the Dutch band's 1973 album Moontan. The song is told from the point of view of a man in a car trying to drive to his lover without using any physical means of locating her like a telephone.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Drag the Waters by Pantera

A little Pantera to get your Labor Day Weekend kicked off right! Today's Metal Track is Drag the Waters off of their 1996 album The Great Southern Trendkill.

Dime said that this song "Is about a lifetime of dealing with people that you can't tell what they're really comin' at you for, or what their motives really are. You've got to drag the waters to get to the bottom and find out the truth." RIP Dime :(

I'll be dragging the waters this weekend but it will be with my bare feet at the lake.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Electric Head, Pt. 2 (The Ecstasy) by White Zombie

Today's Metal Track is Electric Head, Pt.2 (The Ecstasy) by White Zombie. This is the first single released off of their 1995 album Astro-Creep: 2000. The song uses samples from the 1971 movie Shaft. The line "A fistful of hair and a splinter to the mind" is a reference to the 1979 movie Zombie where a zombie pulls a woman by her hair through a closet causing a piece of wood to stick through her eye.

Today's Metal Track is Refuse/Resist by Sepultura. This is the opening and title track from their 1993 album Chaos A.D. The intro of the song is a recording of Max's then unborn first son, Zyon.

Chaos A.D.
Tanks on the streets
Confronting police
Bleeding the Plebs
Raging crowd
Burning cars
Bloodshed starts

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Born of a Broken Man by Rage Against the Machine

Today's Metal Track is Born of a Broken Man by Rage Against the Machine. This is off of their 1999 album The Battle of Los Angeles. This album was the last original material released by the band. They reunited and toured for awhile but have not played a show since 2011.

Hopefully they can find it in them to release some more material in the future. Seems like they would have plenty of social issues to write about from the past 16 years.

Born of a broken man
But not a broken man

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Amy, I Love You by Cloudkicker

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Amy, I Love You by Cloudkicker. This is the closing track off of his 2010 album Beacons. During an AMA session on Reddit, Ben revealed that the titles for every song on this album come from the last few lines of cockpit recorder tapes from planes that crashed. :(

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is To Forgive by The Smashing Pumpkins. This is off of the Dawn to Dusk disc from their 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Weekend Wildcard - Free Fallin' by Tom Petty

And I'm Freeeeee, Free Fallin'

This Weekend's Wildcard is Free Fallin' by Tom Petty. This is the opening track off of his 1989 debut solo album Full Moon Fever. This was the first Tom Petty song I remember seeing on MTV as a kid. It's a nostalgic song about a childhood sweetheart. A sweetheart he left behind in Florida when he moved to the West Coast to chase his dreams of being a musician.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Skin 'o My Teeth by Megadeth

Today's Metal Track is Skin o' My Teeth by Megadeth. This is the opening track off of their 1992 album Countdown to Extension. The phrase "skin of my teeth" comes from the Bible in Job 19:20.  "My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth."

Oh how I wish Marty had stayed with Megadeth. Another great solo on this track.

My favorite part of the song is at the end of the following verse where you can hear a drawer being slammed.

I won't feel the hurt
I'm not trash any longer
That that doesn't kill me
Only makes me stronger
I need a ride to the morgue
That's what 911 is for
So, tag my toe and don't forget
Ooh to close the drawer

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Speed of Light by Iron Maiden

Today's Metal Track is Speed of Light by Iron Maiden. This off of their upcoming album The Book of Souls which comes out September 4th.

This video is very fun and extremely well done. It pays homage to tons of different video games like Donkey Kong and Mortal Kombat and features tons of classic Maiden characters and images. There's little gems hidden everywhere.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Killed by Death by Motorhead

Today's Metal Track is "Killed by Death" by Motorhead. This is off their 1984 album No Remorse. Lemmy will tell you that Motorhead is not a metal band but a punk band. Well, he's not running this blog now is he? What's more metal than Lemmy driving a motorcycle through a wall, getting sent to the electric chair, and then driving his motorcycle out of the grave?

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Love You to Death by Type O Negative

In honor of my wife's birthday today, today's Metal Track is Love You to Death by Type O Negative. This is off of their 1996 album October Rust. Peter Steele is singing about a man trying to prove himself as a worthy lover.

I'm sure Jessica will be listening to this on loop the rest of the day. She loves her some Type O Negative. I "Love You to Death" baby :-b

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Inexhaustible Savagery by Conquering Dystopia

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Inexhaustible Savagery by the supergroup Conquering Dystopia. This is off of their 2014 self titled debut album. The song is only about 4 minutes long. The second half of the video shows them doing some testing with the amp.

Interesting note I discovered about this album. The band cannot legally release this album on CD due to one of the member's record label under their other band. Good thing they released it in the digital age!

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - I Saw Red (Acoustic) by Warrant

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is I Saw Red by Warrant. This is an acoustic version of a song off of their 1990 album Cherry Pie. I had not actually heard this version until I searched for the original today. The song is a true story about Jani Lane walking in on his girlfriend in bed with his best friend. He had a nervous breakdown that delayed the released of their previous album Dirt Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich.

RIP Jani :(

Here is the original:

Weekend Wildcard - White Room by Cream

This Weekend's Wildcard is White Room by Cream. This is off of the Supergroup's 1968 double album Wheels of Fire. The band consisted of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker. I watched a little bit of a documentary on Ginger Baker the other day and the dude is crazy. I really need to finish watching it.

Here is the documentary. I think it is on Netflix too.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) by Tool

Today's Metal Track is 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) by Tool. This is the title track off of their 2006 album 10,000 Days. It follows the song titled Wings for Marie (Pt.1). This song may take awhile to grow on you because it has long building intro. If you get really impatient, fast forward to around the 4 minute mark.

There are so many great parts in the song that are filled with emotion by Maynard. This song is about his mother Judith Marie who was paralyzed from a stroke when he was 11 and died 27 years later which is roughly 10,000 days. It's about her finally getting her wings and ascending to heaven.

10,000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...

You're the only one who can hold your head up high.
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I have come home now...!"
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.

"It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings...!"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Getaway by Voivod

Today's Metal Track is The Getaway by Voivod. This is the opening track off of their 2006 album Katorz. This was during the Jason Newsted era which came on the heels of him leaving Metallica in 2001. I'm not very familiar with the band's material but I heard this on the radio this week and thought it worth a post.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Clenching the Fists of Dissent by Machine Head

Today's Metal Track is Clenching the Fists of Dissent by Machine Head. This is the opening track off of their killer 2007 album The Blackening. This is an anti-war song written about the post 9/11 environment and the Iraqi war.

So how do they sleep?
While our mothers weep
They're selling our souls
And our blood for oil

Robert Flynn said that this track was one of the most difficult songs to record. "...he attributed the difficulty to the amount of tracks; the introduction of the song has 90, including multiple three-part harmony with two guitars, 20 tracks of snare drum, four tracks of kick drum, and military marching cymbals. The song continues with five electric guitars, three acoustic guitars and two bass guitars."

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - X-Ray Visions by Clutch

First thing that I did, was buy a pack of smokes,
check in to a motel and consult my horoscope.

Today's Metal Track is X-Ray Visions by Clutch. This is the first single from their upcoming album Psychic Warfare which is scheduled to be released on October 2nd. I hope the rest of the album jams this much!

It's funny that most of the band members look like your regular office guys especially in this video.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - The Creeper by Pelican

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is The Creeper by Pelican. This laid back jam is off of their 2009 album What We All Come to Need. Greg Anderson from Sunn O))) provide guest guitar work on this track. And no that is not a typo, the band's name is really "Sunn O)))". Never heard of them but I might check them out based on this.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Oh Sherrie by Steve Perry

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Oh Sherrie by Steve Perry. This is off of his 1984 debut solo album Street Talk. At the time he was still a member of Journey. This song was about his then girlfriend, Sherrie Swafford, who appears in the video as well.

Weekend Wildcard - Urgent by Foreigner

This Weekend's Wildcard is Urgent by Foreigner. This is off of their 1981 album 4 which was a major success all over the world and included other great hits like Juke Box Hero and Waiting for a Girl Like You.

I'm sure I've posted this before (or maybe Christy did) but when I hear Foreigner, I always think of Carl and his Foreigner belt. "I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!"

And Carl

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Hypnotize by System of a Down

Today's Metal Track is Hypnotize by System of a Down. This is the title track of their 2005 album by the same name. The album was the second part of their Mezmerize/Hypnotize double album.

The song's lyrics in the verses refer to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and propaganda's harmful effects upon its target audiences.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Crack the Skye by Mastodon

Today's Metal Track is Crack the Skye by Mastodon. This is the title track off of their 2009 album by the same name. This track is about Brann Dailor's (Drummer) sister, Skye, who committed suicide at age 14. I got the pleasure of meeting Brann and getting his autograph on this album when they came to Cat's Cradle.

"Momma, don't let them take her
Don't let them take her down
Please tell Lucifer he can't have this one
Her spirit's too strong"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Fight Fire with Fire by Metallica

Today's Metal Track is Fight Fire with Fire by Metallica. This is the opening track off of their 1984 album Ride The Lightning. I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I was with my Dad and my stepbrother and we had been to the store to buy the cassette.

On the way home, Dad let us play the tape and the intro to this song came on. We had been hyping it up saying it would "throw down" and when this started, Dad laughed at us and said something to the effect of "this isn't rocking at all". Then it kicked in, and we we've headbanging to it ever since.

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Is This Love by Bob Marley and the Wailers. This is off of his 1978 album Kaya. Marley's single bed in Nile Mile, Jamaica was the inspiration behind the line "We'll share the shelter of my single bed."

Weekend Wildcard - Don't Bring Me Down by Electric Light Orchestra

This Weekend's Wildcard is Don't Bring Me Down by Electric Light Orchestra. This is off of ELO's 1979 album Discovery and is their highest charting hit in the US to date.

A common misheard lyric in the song is "Don't bring me down, Bruce". I thought that is what it was too until I just read the Wiki page, lol. Apparently it was a made up lyric "Grrooss". It's funny because that's the most recognizable part of the song. It became so popular that the singer began singing Bruce at shows for fun.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Mudshovel by Staind

Today's Metal Track is Mudshovel by Staind. This is off of their 1999 album Dysfunction. I thought this was their debut album until Jimmy gave me their 1996 self-released debut album Tormented as a gift last week. I was also surprised when I was listening through that CD and came across an earlier version of this song with the title Mudshuvel.

This has always been my favorite Staind track. After the became famous they really went soft which helped them sell millions of records to the mainstream audiences.

Here is the earlier version I was referring to

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Down From The Sky by Trivium

Thanks to Adam for filling in the last couple of days.

Today's Metal Track is Down From The Sky by Trivium. This is another one off of their 2008 album Shogun. This song criticizes those who start war for profit or religion and also warns of nuclear holocaust.

The part starting at 3:38 absolutely destroys!!!

They pump us through the machine's valves
To cleanse the world's "disease"
We are the ammunition
That will cause all life to cease

Annihilate
All those who stand in their way
Obliterate
They'll rain their holocaust
Down from the sky

The vampires feed on the wars of mankind

Scott's Metal Track of the Day (Guest host Adam) - The Mission by Sahaj Ticotin (Queensryche Cover)

I get to post another track of the day since Scott is out of town. This one is a little different. This is a cover of "The Mission" originally done by Queensryche. This cover is done by Sahaj Ticotin from the band Ra. I've always been a huge fan of the band and particularly of his writing ability. Enjoy!!

I'm posting today's metal track of the day since Scott is out of town. This song is by Byzantine and is called "The Agonies". it's from their latest release To Release is to Resolve. This album is probably their best release even outshining Oblivion which is typically viewed as their best overall album.

Enjoy!

It looks like you can still buy them from his website for $25.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest. The band released this as a single in 1972. It is often incorrectly credited to Van Morrison and Elvis Costello even though they have never recorded the song. This is due to mislabeling over the years.

Weekend Wildcard - She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult

This Weekend's Wildcard is She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult. I can't believe it has taken me this long to post the first song by The Cult. These guys are awesome. This is off of their 1985 album Love. This song was the band's first hit and gain them recognition amongst their peers like Bono, David Bowie, and Freddie Mercury.

Straight from singer Ian Atsbury: “She Sells Sanctuary” was probably referring to the power of finding solitude in a woman’s arms and the matriarchal energy, whether it be an actual physical person or in a spiritual sense, the greatest matriarch, and thinking of the cosmos as a female energy rather than a male energy.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Left Behind by Slipknot

Today's Metal Track is Left Behind by Slipknot. This is off of their 2001 album Iowa. This song is a about Corey's past when he was homeless living under a bridge in Iowa. Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't by Anthrax

Today's Metal Track is Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't by Anthrax. This is off of their 2011 album Anthrax. This album saw the return of original singer Joey Belladonna. The last album he appeared on was 1990's Persistence of Time.

The title is a quote from the series remake of Battlestar Galactica. Looks like it was from the 2006 episode Lay Down Your Burdens: Part 2. I've never watched the show but I understand that it has a major cult following.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Sabbra Cadabra by Black Sabbath

Today's Metal Track is a love song by Black Sabbath?! Wait what? That is correct. Sabbra Cadabra is a love song off of their 1973 album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

Keyboardist Rick Wakeman from Yes was brought in as a session player for this song. He refused payment from the band and was compensated with beer instead. Led Zeppelin members showed up during the recording of the album and John Bonham wanted to play on this track as well but Sabbath wanted to play other material for the occasion.

Metallica covered this song as part of a melody with A National Acrobat (Also Sabbath) on their 1998 cover album Garage Inc.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Footsteps in the Dark by The Isley Brothers

Today's Easy Like Morning Track is Footsteps in the Dark by the The Isley Brothers. This silky smooth jam is off of their 1977 album Go For Your Guns. Here is the Ice Cube track:

Weekend Wildcard - Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A.

This Weekend's Wildcard is Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A. This is the title track off of their 1988 debut album. This album is considered to be the pioneering record of gangster rap. I'm pretty stoked about the movie that's coming out this year with the same name. I'd write more but my Internet is out so I'm doing this on my phone. Feel free to add to it.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Playing With Spiders/Skullkrusher by Overkill

Today's Metal Track is Playing With Spiders/Skullkrusher by Overkill. This is off of their 1989 album The Years of Decay. The short intro is Playing With Spiders while the rest of the track is Skullkrusher. This song is more doom metal in contrast with the band's normal style of thrash. It's slow for awhile but picks up about halfway in.

Blitz is stellar once again with great lyrics and that killer attitude in his voice. Also, I'm not certain but I think they recorded a motorcycle revving up and used it at the 50 second mark.

My favorite part (4:38):
Ten thousand nightmares
Ten thousand years
Ten thousand martyrs crying
Ten million tears

All the thinking never done
All the murder all the fun
Wash the blood from your hands
Bury your secrets in the sand
And forget!!!!

Scott's Metal Track is Ziltodian Empire by Devin Townsend

Today's Metal Track is Ziltoidian Empire by Devin Townsend. This is off of the Dark Matters CD from his 2014 double album Z².

During this song we find out that Ziltoid has captured one of the Poozers from planet Titan. The Collective warns Ziltoid that the War Princess (Queen Blattaria of Titan) must not find out that he has taken the Poozer because it will lead to intergalactic war. Ziltoid ensures him that she will never find out. Shortly afterwards, the Poozer escapes Ziltoid and returns to the War Princess through the wormhole.

[Ziltoid:] Please tell me where the Poozer is now...
[Computer:] Current location of the Poozer: directly through the wormhole.
[Ziltoid:] Hmmmm... well... poop.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Wild Thing by Sam Kinison

Today's Metal Track is Wild Thing as performed by 80's comedian Sam Kinison. If you've never heard of Sam before, this video sums him up pretty well. He was known for his intense delivery, politically incorrect humor, and his trademark scream. Surprisingly, he used to be a pentecostal preacher. I guess they have a similar intense delivery though.

This awesomely bad song and video is loaded with cameos. Band members from GNR, Aerosmith, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and Billy Idol. It also includes model Jessica Hahn who is best known for the sex scandal involving televangelist Jim Bakker (I didn't even know about that). And don't for get Rodney Dangerfield.

Sadly, Sam Kinison died in 1992 when a 17 year old drunk driver hit him head on when he was headed to a sold-out show in Texas with his wife. They had only been married six days. RIP

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Live Wire by Motley Crue

Today's Metal Track is Live Wire by Motley Crue. This is the opening track off of their 1981 debut album Too Fast For Love. While Motley Crue is considered a hair metal band overall, this track is absolutely thrash metal; mainly due to Mick Mars' killer riffage!

Notice Nikki Sixx lights himself on fire during the video. They did this because they didn't have enough money to afford pyrotechnics.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Now We Run by Steve Vai

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Now We Run by Steve Vai. This is off of his 2009 live album Where the Wild Things Are. The song was never recorded for a studio album. That guitar he's got is flipping fantastic. This track earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2010.

Weekend Wildcard - (I've Had) The Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

In honor of tonight's Swayze Summer Party this Weekend's Wildcard is (I've Had) The Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. In case you live under rock, this song is used as the finale song for Dirty Dancing after Swayze pulls Baby up on stage at the end of season revue at Kellermans.

I'm scoring major brownie points with my wife on this one!
