This Weekend's Wildcard is I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty. The YouTube clip is mislabeled. This is off of Tom Petty's first solo album Full Moon River (1989) and is not a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers release.
Recently, Sam Smith (Never heard of him before) put out a song, Stay With Me, that uses almost the exact melody from this song. Petty's publishing company reached out to Sam Smith's publisher and they agreed to give Petty and Jeff Lynn co-writing credits on the song. You will hear people say that Tom Petty sued him or threatened to sue but it was nothing like that.
Here is the Sam Smith Song
Exploring Heavy Metal and all its glory. Heavy Metal is often misunderstood and thought to be just a bunch of guys banging and screaming when in fact it can be extremely thoughtful, intelligent, and sincere. Expect some throw-down-head-banging, chill mood metal, and gloomy death metal that you're probably not going to hear on the radio. On the weekends we'll mix things up with a Weekend Wildcard and an Easy Like Sunday Morning Track to get you over your hangover!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Metal Health by Quiet Riot
BANG YOUR HEAD!!!
Today's Metal Track is Metal Health by Quiet Riot. This is the title track off of the band's break through 1983 album Metal Health. This was the first ever heavy metal album to reach the number 1 spot on the Billboard Charts. While the song title is officially Metal Health it has been listed numerous way throughout the years including Bang Your Head (Metal Health), Metal Health (Bang Your Head), and simply Bang Your Head.
Sadly in 2007 lead singer Kevin DuBrow died from a drug overdose. Last night I watched a documentary on Showtime titled Quiet Riot: Well Now You're Here, There's No Way Back and it inspired me to post this song today. The documentary focused on the band's struggle to return after Kevin's passing.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Beyond the Realms of Death by Judas Priest
Today's Metal Track is Beyond the Realms of Death by Judas Priest. This is off of their 1978 album Stained Glass. This was the band's heaviest album at the time and is touted as a highly influential album in the speed metal and thrash genres. This song is remarkable for it's dual solos (First one by Glenn Tipton and second by KK Downing) and Halford's great vocal performance.
This album was the first to feature the current Judas Priest logo which replaces the former gothic script logo used on the previous albums.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Bark at the Moon by Ozzy Osbourne
Today's Metal Track is Bark at the Moon by Ozzy Osbourne. This classic is the title and opening track off of his 1983 album by the same name. The song is about a creature that attacked a town, was killed, and returned to life to attack the town again. However, the video portrays a scientist (Ozzy) who drinks a potion in his lab that causes him to turn into a werewolf. The album cover features Ozzy in this same werewolf costume.
This song was written by Jake E. Lee and Bob Daisley but Sharon Osbourne threaten to fire them from the band if they didn't sign over their rights to the song. So they did. One of the many 'not so cool' things Sharon has done over the years.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Alpha by Periphery
Today's Metal Track is Alpha by Periphery. They released two physically separate albums today as a double album titled Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega. This song is the title track off of the former and this video was released today along with the albums.
I saw these guys with Adam and Greg a couple of weeks ago at Cat's Cradle and they put on a good show minus the extremely blinding lights they used for their set.
Stop bleeding on the inside, we are alive
And it's more than enough to paint the walls that are white
Can we show the ones who are blind?

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Dead Between the Walls by Pelican
Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Dead Between the Walls by Pelican. This is off of their 2007 album City of Echoes. This was the first ever music video by Pelican. Most of their previous songs were too long. The video was shot in the California desert and was an homage to Kyuss’ "Green Machine" video with "sand, fast cars, blistering colors, and just a focus on rockin’."
The video pokes fun at the fact that Pelican is an Instrumental only band. The bearded man with the microphone finally reaches the band when the song ends and they just stare at him like "What are you doing?"

Easy Like Sunday Morning Tracks - Speak to Me/Breathe by Pink Floyd
Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Tracks are Speak to Me/Breathe by Pick Floyd. These are the opening tracks on their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon. The two tracks together stress the mundane and futile elements of life that accompany
the ever-present threat of madness, and the importance of living one's
own life – "Don't be afraid to care". On some versions of this album, the two songs are grouped together as one track while other versions have them separate.

Weekend Wildcard - Dune Buggy by The President of the USA
This Weekend's Wildcard is Dune Buggy by The Presidents of the USA. This fun song is off of their 1995 debut self-title album. This entire album is great and fun to listen to. I wore this CD out when I was in middle school and high school. Funny thing is, I can't really tell you anything they did after that. This song is loaded with fun and creative lyrics.
A little blind spider took the wheel
Navigatin' grass blades completely by feel
Got a sassy chassis, sparklin in the sun
All four small bald fat tires
Rockin through the sand and burnin' up

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - What Doesn't Die by Anthrax
Today's Metal Track is What Doesn't Die by Anthrax. This is off of their 2003 album We've Come For You All. This song is one of the heavier tracks on the album. This album was the last studio album of the John Bush (Singer) era. While I really like this album, Joey Belladonna will always be THE singer of Anthrax.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - March of the Poozers by Devin Townsend Project
Today's Metal Track is March of the Poozers by Devin Townsend Project. This is off of Dark Matters which is the second disc of his latest double album Z². This concept album is a sequel to his 2007 solo album Ziltoid the Omniscient. I think the the Dark Matters album is outstanding and extremely fun to listen to.
I'm still learning about the storyline to this album but I think the Poozers are controlled by the War Princess who sent them through the wormhole to attack Earth and exact revenge on Ziltoid. He had kidnapped one of the Poozers and taken him to Earth but he let him escape. The Poozer also tell the War Princess about coffee and they decide they want to steal all of it.
The Poozers are both cute and ugly at the same time. The part 25 seconds in is hilarious.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - AOV by Slipknot
Today's Metal Track is AOV by Slipknot. This is my favorite track off of their album .5 The Gray Chapter which was released last year. It's pretty obvious after listening to the song but AOV stands for Approaching Original Violence. I think this song destroys, especially at the beginning of each verse (0:16 and 1:30) and the outro.
We Bury What We Fear The Most- Approaching Original Violence.
Is the Silence where you hide it? ‘Cause I don’t recognize you anymore.

Today's Metal Track is F.E.V.E.R. by the German power metal band Orden Ogan. This is off of their upcoming 2015 album Ravenhead. I just stumbled upon this song today thanks to YouTube recommendations. I'm not a huge power metal fan but I think this track is awesome.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Ashes of Lesser Men by Conquering Dystopia
Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Ashes of Lesser Men by Conquering Dystopia. This throwdown track is off of the band's 2014 debut self-titled album.
I already mentioned this in a previous post but... This is a side project by Jeff Loomis and Keith Merrow that started due to fan demand from the duo performing gear review videos on YouTube. The other band members include Alex Rudinger from The Faceless on drums and Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse on bass.

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Drive by The Cars. This is off of their1984 album Heartbeat City. This one was written by Ric Ocasek but is sung by the bassist Benjamin Orr. Sadly, Benjamin Orr died in 2000 with pancreatic cancer. RIP.

Weekend Wildcard - Tiny Dancer by Elton John
Today's Weekend Wildcard is Hold Me Closer Tony Danza.... I mean Tiny Dancer by Elton John. This is off of his 1971 album Madman Across the Water. The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin and are about the many beautiful women he met in California in 1970. The song has been used in numerous films and TV shows but my favorite usage is in the movie Almost Famous where the cast sings it while on the tour bus.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Blue by A Perfect Circle
Today's Metal Track is Blue by A Perfect Circle. This is another one off of their 2003 album Thirteenth Step which is a concept album about the different aspects and perspectives of drug addiction. This one is from the perspective of someone having a difficult time dealing with the aftermath of an overdose.
Call an Optimist, she's turning blue.
Such a lovely color for you
Call an Optimist, she's turning blue.
While I just sit and stare at you.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - I Hate by Overkill
Today's Metal Track is I Hate by Overkill. This classic is off of their 1989 album The Years of Decay. I absolutely love the riff at the beginning. This song is full with great lyrics by Blitz that are great mainly because of the attitude in his voice. This song is anti-authority and coming from someone who hates their job.
"Open your mouth just one more time and my foot's going down" \m/

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - My Famed Disappearing Act by Thank You Scientist
Today's Metal Track is My Famed Disappearing Act by Thank You Scientist. I just saw these guys for the first time this past Saturday when they opened for Periphery at Cat's Cradle. Their use of brass instruments and a violin mixed with metal is very cool. This is off of their debut album Maps of Non-Existent Places which came out last October.
These guys are on Claudio Sanchez's (Coheed and Cambria) label Evil Ink. You can see why he likes them. If you like Coheed and Cambria, you'll like these guys.

Today's Instrumental Track is Always with Me, Always with You by Joe Satriani. This beautiful laid back song is off of his 1987 album Surfing with the Alien. This was one of the first instrumental rock albums to chart on the Billboard Top 40.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Lights by Journey
Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Lights by Journey. This classic is the opening track off of the band's 1978 album Infinity. This was the first album to feature Steve Perry on vocals and began the era of mainstream success for the band.
Steve Perry originally wrote this song about L.A. before joining the band. The original lyrics were "and the sun shines on LA". When Perry moved to San Francisco to the join the band he changed it to "and the sun shines on the bay".
The fro and fu manchu combination in this video is fantastic. Especially the solo.

Weekend Wildcard - Baby Blue by Badfinger
This Weekend's Wildcard is Baby Blue by Badfinger. This is off of the British band's 1971 album Straight Up. The song was written about a lady named Dixie Armstrong whom Peter Ham was dating at the time.
The song made a resurgence in 2013 when it was used in the series finale of Breaking Bad. Of course, in this case the song was used as a reference to the blue crystal meth that Walt and Jesse were famous for and not a girl.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Death March by Black Label Society
Today's Metal Track is Death March by Black Label Society. This is another one off of his 2005 album Mafia.
Where have we gone, what have we done
Where have we gone, nowhere left to run
Pray for war, pray for death, pray for hate
Pray for all that you know
All these year ain't nothing's changed
And you know
Spiral of darkness, as the fools await
Peace through destruction has sealed our fate
Where have we gone, what have we done
Where have we gone, nowhere left to run
Pray for war, pray for death, pray for hate
Pray for all that you know

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath
Today's Metal Track is Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath. This is off of their 1971 album Master of Reality. 44 years ago, that's crazy. This song, like many other early Sabbath songs, has an anti-war theme. Ozzy continued playing this song live after he went solo.
This is another one of those songs that people might think is evil or explicit but it's really a song about peace and love.
So you children of the world, listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in spread the word today
Show the world that love is still alive you must be brave
Or you children of today are children of the grave.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Extremophile Elite by Between the Buried and Me
Today's Metal Track is Extremophile Elite by Between the Buried and Me. This is off of their 2012 concept album The Parallax II: Future Sequence. This album is about two Prospects that live in two different planes of existence and are separated by billions of years. The two are going through similar dilemmas but become aware of one another. Extremophile refers to the two prospects and is defined as "An organism that thrives in physically or geochemically extreme conditions that are detrimental to most life on Earth."
In this song, Prospect 1 is describing meeting Prospect 2 for the first time. "Space flight navigator, A walking mirror, Galaxy drifter, Entwined together, To grasp the other hand, To hear the other speak".
One cool part in the song is at about the 4:18 mark where Prospect 1 is so annoyed by the loud machines that he puts his head in the dirt. The music stops abruptly leading right into a xylophone solo.
The song concludes with Prospect 2 finding a letter in the place where Prospect 1's head was buried. A letter he had written for his wife to explain his actions. Now he knows that it did not reach them and that they are likely dead. This leads him with no purpose and causes him to go crazy with huge ramifications told later in the story. If you couldn't tell, I really love this album!

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Siege Engine by Buckethead
Today's Instrumental Metal Track is another one from everyone's favorite bucket wearing guitarist. This is Siege Engine off of Buckethead's 22nd studio album Albino Slug which was released in 2008. The 2:45 mark and beyond is just a delight. Beautiful stuff.
I'd love to listen to all of his tracks but there is just no way to keep up with him. He has released 45 albums since I last posted one of his track in April of last year. Ridiculous.
A siege engine is a device used to break or circumvent walls in warfare. Some of the earliest types of siege engines were battering rams and catapults.

Weekend Wildcard - You're the Best by Joe Esposito
You're the best, around! Nothing's ever going to keep you down!
This Weekend's Wildcard is You're the Best brought to you by Joe Esposito. This is off of the Karate Kid soundtrack from 1984. It was used during the All-Valley Karate Championships montage.
The song was originally written for Rocky but it was eventually replaced by Eye of the Tiger. The director of Karate Kid liked it so much that he decided to use it in the movie. The song received criticism for the line "History repeats itself" since this was used in the kid's first tournament.
The song also made a strong return in the South Park episode The Losing Edge where Randy get's in fights at all of the boys' little league baseball games.
Here is the Randy Scene. "I thought this was Amurica"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - To Sirius by Gojira
Today's Metal Track is To Sirius by Gojira. This is kind of the title track off of their 2005 concept album From Mars to Sirius. The track preceding this one on the album is From Mars. The album is about the resurrection of a dead planet through an interplanetary quest. Sirius is the brightest star system in the the Earth's sky. The music video cuts out part of the song. I guess they just wanted to shorten it.
Now from a solar system
To another I fly
I come with life in my veins
Through darkened space I ran
I left a struggle behind
And faced the fear that's alive
I lost a world and traveled
Straight across from the sky
To find the gates of the heart
Now from a solar system
To another I fly
I come with life in my veins
Through darkened space I ran
I left a struggle behind
And faced the fear that's alive

Straight across from the sky
To find the gates of the heart
