Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Ultimate Sin by Ozzy Osbourne

Today's Metal Track is The Ultimate Sin by Ozzy Osbourne. This is the opening and titled track off of his 1985 album. The album was initially supposed to be Killer of Giants after another track on the album but was changed by Ozzy at the last moment.

The video depicts Ozzy as an evil oil tycoon. It is pretty funny to see him in a full suit and cowboy hat. That look is still better for him than that awful 80s perm and sequin jacket.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - If You Want Blood (You Got It) by AC/DC

Today's Metal Track is If You Want Blood (You Got It) by AC/DC. I know it's not exactly Metal but it rocks! This is off of their 1979 album Highway to Hell. This was the last album to feature Bon Scott on vocals. Sadly he died the following year. RIP

This song has been featured in numerous movies; Iron Man 2, Empire Records, The Longest Yard, Shoot Em Up, Final Destination 5 and finally, The Dukes of Hazzard. Prior to this song being recorded, the band released a live album by the same name.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Got the Time by Anthrax

Today's Metal Track is Got the Time by Anthrax. This cover song is off of their 1990 album Persistence of Time. It was originally recorded by Joe Jackson in 1979 on his debut album Sharp!

Jackson didn't really care for their version stating "I think it sounds kind of clumsy compared to the way we did it on the Live album. I mean, our version is really smoking. Theirs is actually slower than ours, and kind of lumpen. The way I feel about it is, Thanks for the royalties, guys."

That Bass line!

Here is the original. I think both are great!

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Summer Song by Joe Satriani

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Summer Song by Joe Satriani. This is off of his 1992 song The Extremist. You may not recognize it by name but once you hear it you will remember it. This has remained one of his most popular songs and is a mainstay at his concerts.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Jolene by Ray LaMontagne

By request, today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Jolene performed by Ray LaMontagne. This song was originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973.

"Jolene" tells the tale of a woman confronting Jolene, a stunningly beautiful woman, who she believes is trying to steal away her man and begging her "please don't take my man."

Weekend Wildcard - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles

This Weekend's Wildcard is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. This is both the opening track version and the reprise version mashed into one. They come from their 1967 concept album by the same name where each band member assumed and alter-ego in the fictional band.

The two tracks serve as bookends to the album. The opening track introduces the band and the reprise is their goodbye song. The transition takes place around the 2 minute mark.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - (Sic) by Slipknot

Today's Metal Track is (Sic) by Slipknot. This is the opening track off of their 1999 self-titled debut album. I've included the intro track "742617000027" with it since the two fit nicely together. The intro includes repeated, sampled audio from Charles Manson stating "The whole thing, I think it's sick."

(Sic) evolved from the song "Slipknot" on their Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. album that the band released in 1996. 742617000027 was the bar code on that album. The band considers that album to be a demo album because of the change in style and lineup from that release.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - From Sleep Awake by Devin Townsend Project

Today's Metal Track is From Sleep Awake by Devin Townsend Project. This is off of Dark Matters which is the second CD of his double album Z². It's hard to just pick one song because they flow together. I highly recommend listening to the first 4 songs together. I particularly like this song because of the atmospheric elements.

The beginning of this song would be an outstanding entrance song for any sport like wrastlin, baseball, or MMA. "There he is now!!"

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Greenhouse Effect by Testament

In honor of Earth Day, today's Metal Track is Greenhouse Effect by Testament. This is off of their 1989 album Practice What You Preach. This is still one of my favorite album covers. No matter what side you take on the greenhouse effect debate, we can all agree that this song rocks.

Our only hope to breathe again
To stop the madness closing in
What will we do when all is lost?
Environmental holocaust

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Rock Bottom by UFO

Today's Metal Track is Rock Bottom by UFO. This is off of their 1974 album Phenomenon. This was the first album to feature Michael Schenker. His addition led to the departure from the blues rock that defined their first two albums. UFO never gained great commercial success but they have been extremely influential to numerous bands and artists that did.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Escaping Velocity by Jeff Loomis

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Escaping Velocity by Jeff Loomis. This is off of his 2012 solo album Plains of Oblivion. He has recently joined Arch Enemy and is on tour with them. I hope he continues to release solo work like this album. I prefer this over Arch Enemy but maybe Loomis will be the piece that gets them to the next level.

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Heaven by Warrant

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Heaven by Warrant. This is off of their 1989 debut album Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich. This track was a major hit that surprised the record company. Once they realized it was a hit, they got the band to re-record it to give it a bigger radio sound. The first 250,000 copies of the record featured the original version while later pressings featured a new version.

RIP Jani Lane

Weekend Wildcard - Buffalo Soldier by Bob Marley

This Weekend's Wildcard is Buffalo Soldier by Bob Marley. This is from his final recording sessions in 1980. It did not appear on record until the 1983 posthumous release of Confrontation, when it became one of Marley's best-known songs. The title and lyrics refer to the black U.S. cavalry regiments, known as "Buffalo Soldiers", that fought in the Indian Wars after 1866. Marley likened their fight to a fight for survival, and recasts it as a symbol of black resistance.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day (Hosted by Mike Thompson) - Wires by Red Fang

Scott is on vacation so I'm hijacking the Metal Track of the Day!

Our choice cut for this evening is Red Fang's epic video Wires. This is single-handedly the best use of someone else's $5K in history. Bonus points for guest appearance by Brian Posehn.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Caster of Shame by Death Angel

Today's Metal Track is Caster of Shame by Death Angel. This is another one off of their 2013 album The Dream Calls for Blood. The band began writing material for their next album sometime last year. If it's anything like this album, we're in for a treat!

Merciless blows will wear you down
Nowhere to hide
They seem to come from everywhere
No way to fight
Legs give way to tremendous pain
Then you'll look up
Now! Heed the name
The caster of shame

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Blood on the Radio by Thank You Scientist

Today's Metal Track is Blood on the Radio by Thank You Scientist. This is off of their debut album Maps of Non-Existent Places which was released just last Fall. I  believe this album is a couple of years older than that but last year was the official release under Evil Ink Records. These guys have a pretty cool and unique style with the brass instruments. They are a lot of fun to watch live too.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Thunderhead by Overkill

Today's Metal Track is Thunderhead by Overkill. This is the opening track off of their 2000 album Bloodletting. This track kicks you right in the face with heavy riffs, killer drums and bass, and an onslaught of vocals by Blitz. I know James Purcell is a big fan of this song.

Life was but of a simple dream of doing what was right
Broken into pieces as day turns into night
Life was but a simple dream now all I see is red
Broken into fragments by the thunderhead!!

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - Bad Horsie by Steve Vai

Today's Instrumental Metal Track is Bad Horsie by Steve Vai. This is the opening track off of his 1995 album Alien Love Secrets. The video is from the DVD by the same name. This track is derived from a riff he wrote for the final scene in the 1986 movie Crossroads where he has a guitar duel with Karate Kid.

Here is the Crossroads duel.

Scott's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Layla (Unplugged) by Eric Clapton

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Layla (Unplugged) by Eric Clapton. This is off of his 1992 album Unplugged. The original song was released by Clapton's former band, Derek and the Dominos, on their 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. It is a much faster rock song with wild guitars and harsher vocals. It also is longer and includes a piano coda that is omitted from the unplugged version.

This song was a love song from Clapton to George Harrison's then wife, Pattie Boyd. Clapton and George were friends and Clapton fell in love with her. The title comes from the Persian story Layla and Majnun which is about a princess who was married off by her father to a man she didn't love. This drove Majnun crazy like it drove Clapton crazy that he couldn't have Pattie. George and Pattie divorced in 1977 and Clapton and Pattie married in 1979. George was okay with it and even attended the wedding. However, the marriage end in 1988. At least we got this song out of it.

Weekend Wildcard - What's Up by 4 Non-Blondes

And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?

This Weekend's Wildcard is What's Up by 4 Non-Blondes. One of the greatest sing along songs ever. This is off of the band's 1993 debut album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! This was their one-hit wonder. I couldn't tell you another song they did.

Two things I didn't realize about this song. One, there is a guy in the band. Two, the name of the song is not What's Going On but instead it is What's Up. Apparently they chose that name so it wouldn't be confused with Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Destruction Overdrive by Black Label Society

Today's Metal Track is Destruction Overdrive by Black Label Society. This is off of their 2003 album The Blessed Hellride. For the first four studio albums, including this one, Zakk Wylde recorded everything but the drums.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Tempest by Deftones

Today's Metal Track is Tempest by Deftones. This is off of their 2012 album Koi No Yokan. This song is about the end of the world as it was suppose to happen on December 12, 2012. Apparently a small portion of the song was used in a scene for Furious 7.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Awaken by Dethklok

Today's Metal Track is Awaken by Dethklok off of their debut album Dethalbum. This song is much funnier with the context from the show. In the episode "Dethtroll" from season 1, the band travels to Finland to apologize for something they did they last time they played there (Probably destroying things and killing fans).

They decide to apologize by writing a song specifically for Finland. The bad thing is they took the words from an old Finnish book that subsequently Awakens the troll Mustakrakish who then proceeds to terrorize the country.

Here is the clip preceding the song:

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - The Gnashing by Baroness

Today's Metal Track is The Gnashing by Baroness. This is off of their 2009 album Blue Record.

all of your fears are well founded and true
all my hands are callous and cruel
all of my arrows that riddle you through
are bullets that fire me back into you

all of the rivers are boiling with thirst
all my hands are covered with earth
all of my children that gnash with their teeth
are paperback novels and dogs scratching fleas

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. This song was written by Stevie Nix and was originally released on their self-titled 1975 album. Stevie wrote this song when she was trying to decide whether go back to school or continue her music career with Lindsey Buckingham. Luckily she decided to stick with music. This song has been covered countless times throughout the years and is one of the band's biggest hits.

Weekend Wildcard - Arlandria by Foo Fighters

This Weekend's Wildcard is Arlandria by Foo Fighters. This is off of their 2011 album Wasting Light which I think ranks right up their with their best albums. The title of the song is a reference to the neighborhood that Dave grew up in in Alexandria, VA. I was hooked on this song from the first time I heard the part at 1:45. I have no idea what the video is about. If anyone knows, feel free to share.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Rainbow in the Dark by Dio

Today's Metal Track is Rainbow in the Dark by the legendary Dio. This is off of his 1983 album Holy Diver. I think this is without question his best song of all time. Dio absolutely slays on this track with his powerful vocals. Add in some solid guitar riffs, a sweet solo, and an amazing 80s synthesizer melody and you have yourself one of the all time classic metal songs!

RIP Dio!!!!

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath

Today's Metal Track is Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath. This is off of their 1975 album Sabotage. This is one of the earliest example of Thrash Metal which was later perfected by the likes of Metallica, Megadeth, and Overkill. The closing section of the song comes from a jam session that was later incorporated into the song.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Bloom by Between the Buried and Me

Today's Metal Track is Bloom by Between the Buried and Me off of their 2012 album The Parallax II: Future Sequence. This trippy song is a mix of pulsating pianos, progressive metal, scat singing, and surfing music. It comes completely out of left field on the album and at the end you're asking yourself what in the world did you just listen to. The one thing you do know is that it is awesome!

This song chronologically takes place at the end of Swim to the Moon which is the closing track from their The Great Misdirect. At the end of that song Prospect 1 is about to die floating at sea. When Bloom starts, Prospect 1 is taken to an underwater village where Queen Sea takes away his oxygen, performs tests on him, and makes him dance and sing. After finding out he has a greater purpose, Queen Sea apologizes and brings him back to life before sending him back to the surface. Got it? Good.
