So this weekend JoAnn asked me if Viking Metal was a real thing and I said absolutely. So for her birthday today I am posting THE Viking Metal Band, Amon Amarth, who hail from Sweden. This is Guardians of Asgaard off of their 2008 album Twilight of the Thunder God.
Exploring Heavy Metal and all its glory. Heavy Metal is often misunderstood and thought to be just a bunch of guys banging and screaming when in fact it can be extremely thoughtful, intelligent, and sincere. Expect some throw-down-head-banging, chill mood metal, and gloomy death metal that you're probably not going to hear on the radio. On the weekends we'll mix things up with a Weekend Wildcard and an Easy Like Sunday Morning Track to get you over your hangover!

Weekend Wildcard - Beverly Hills by Weezer
This Weekend's Wildcard is Beverly Hills by Weezer for no reason other than this was playing on the dock when I remembered I needed to post a track today. This is the opening track off of their 2005 album Make Believe.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Brought to the Water by Deafheaven
Today's Metal Track is Brought to the Water by Deafheaven. It is an appropriate song to kick off Memorial Day weekend because I will definitely find myself in the water this weekend. This is the opening track off of their most recent album New Bermuda.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Chemical Warfare by Slayer
Today's Metal Track is Chemical Warfare by Slayer. This is the opening track off of their 1984 EP Haunting the Chapel. Following the success of their 1983 debut album, Show No Mercy, their producer wanted to hurry and put out an EP. They recorded in a studio with no carpet which made it difficult to record the drums because the kit bounced around everywhere on the concrete.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Delivering the Goods by Judas Priest
Today's Metal Track is Delivering the Goods by Judas Priest. This is the opening track off of their 1979 album Killing Machine. I was going to play the studio version but I came across this live duet performance Rob did with Sebastian Bach of Skid Row and it slays. It's got way more energy than the studio version.
Here is the studio version. You be the judge.

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Ravenous Medicine by Voivod
Today's Metal Track is an old school track from the Canadian thrash band Voivod. This is Ravenous Medicine off of their 1987 album Killing Technology. You can definitely hear some of their hardcore punk influence coming through in this track.

Scott's Instrumental Metal Track of the Day - System by OHM
One final tribute to Nick Menza
Today's Instrumental Metal Track is System by OHM. This is one of the numerous bands Nick has played with over the years. It was also the band he was performing with when he collapse on stage. This video was shot last year for the 10th anniversary of Soultone cymbals.
There is another Megadeth connection in this band. Guitarist Chris Poland was the guitarist for Megadeth's first two albums and again on their 2004 album, The System Has Failed. As far as I can tell, Nick and Chris were never apart of Megadeth at the same time, even when Nick was a drum tech prior to joining the band.
RIP Nick!

Scott's Bonus Metal Track of the Day - Rust In Peace...Polaris by Megaedth
Bonus Metal Track in honor of Nick Menza:
This is the closing and title track off of Megadeth's 1990 Rust In Peace album. It directly follows the previously posted, Dawn Patrol. It is impossible for me to hear the end of Dawn Patrol and not have Nick Menza's sweet drum intro from this song in my head. The way the drum line flows with the guitar in this track is fantastic.
The lyrics are from the point of view of a nuclear warhead named Polaris; a reference to the 1960a nuclear submarine named Polaris.
"I spread disease like a dog
Discharge my payload a mile high
Rotten egg air of death wrestles your nostrils
Launch the Polaris, the end doesn't scare us
When will this cease
The warheads will all rust in peace"
Once again, Rust In Peace Nick!

Easy Like Sunday Morning Track - Dawn Patrol by Megadeth
In honor of the passing of Nick Menza yesterday, today's Easy Like Sunday Morning Track is Dawn Patrol by Megdeth. This is off of their legendary 1990 thrash album Rust In Peace. It was the first album to feature both Nick Menza on drums and Marty Friedman on guitar forming the quintessential Megadeth lineup.
On the album this song leads into Rust In Peace...Polaris. I'll follow up with that as a bonus track

Scott's Metal Track of the Day - Tolerate by Staind
Today's Metal Track is Tolerate by Staind. If you are expecting something like "Outside" or "It's Been Awhile" you may not want to click. This is a much rawer version of the band, which I preferred, before they hit the big time with their softer songs. This is the opening track off of their 1996 album Tormented.
This is a rare CD because only 4,000 copies were originally pressed and the later re-released copies were only sold at concerts. Lucky for me I have a good buddy like Jimmy who bought me a copy last year!
